Yamaha HS50m / HS80m???

regardless of what monitors you get/got... you might not want to trust one pair entirely. Having more then one reference is always an advantage. I do my mixes on a low end pair of monitors but I have been working with them for a long time so I got to know their characteristics.... but for more serious stuff that I plan on playing live, I got a few decent PA systems around my place that I run my stuff through for some final touches if needed. I also have a few sets of random headphones...

More sound sources to mix on is never a bad thing... though too many options can certainly get you spinning your wheels when you are down to a mix that sounds perfect on some speakers and crap on others. Sometimes you just don't know what to do until you've experienced this several times.

I've got the 50m and love 'em. For the size of my room and paired with a sub they fill the room quite nicely. I actually thought for the size they do produce very good bass, but obviously the 80's will chew them up in a side by side for speaker sound/response/quality just due to the size. Really though, depends on what you're mixing to and what your goals are. Mixing for car stereo speakers can be completely different than mixing for a club PA system. Worse both have just as many variables that you have no control over as a producer.

If you can afford the HS80m definately go with these. you won't regret it.

Also I got the Matching Sub, it's very punchy and opens up the system. Very pleased with the combo.

I love mixing on Yamaha HS80m's as they are beautiful sounding and with longer sessions don't fatigued my ears. two thumbs up!

Those with Yamaha HS50M's, how "small" is your room? if possible, could you post a picture?

I've been contemplating about getting the HS50M'S and HS80M's for over a year now. I was leaning towards the HS80M's at first but I'm in a box small room, and where I'll be staying soon is bigger but I'm not sure if it's big enough for HS80M's, so I've been looking at the HS50M's for the past few months.

HS50's combined with the woofer are just fine.
very good for small rooms.
i have got a instrumental vinyl ep coming, all produced in the bedroom - sound is fine (in terms of boom bappyness). i have heard the beats in the mastering studio on big genelecs - OK!
you gotta experiment, you gotta balance them with the woofer, check how much bass is enough and realistic.
you gotta find that point. this will take some time.
also, like someone posted here, you gotta check the switches on the back of the speakers, this will improve many things. if you dont do this homework, then yeah, they will mislead you.
and one of the most important tipps that i can give you is:
do the car check.
mix the beat, burn to cd, listen to it in your car, return to the studio, improve things, etc.....

Because people feel the need to own the same ish as every one else..thinking if every one else has them they must be good. Most people can't go audition monitors so they go with what every one else either tells them or what every one has...
I bet if it wasn't for the NS-10 no one would be even thinking about the Yamaha monitors, thing is these Yamaha monitors couldn't be further from a NS-10 if they tried...or NS-1000 which even by todays standards is a very good and hi-tech speaker. BUT because they have a white cone, they sell

The MSP-10 Studio are good monitors and imo better than the HS series

i didnt buy my hs's based on the ns's... i got them because of my experience with yamaha as a brand (outside of recording equipment) i only found out about the ns models after the sales guy mentioned what they where liken to...

I'd roll with 80's for the woofer size alone

word. MSP are the higher end models.

I went the used route.

Copped the Event ASP6 and so far so good, might get a sub and thats it.
