The aux send is the level of sound from that channel you are routing to the auxillary out on your mixing board. This is where you route from your mixer to an fx board/rack ect. The aux return is where you plug in your fx send from your fx unit. The knob that corasponds with aux return, is to control the input level of the "Effected signal."
If you had passive ins on your keys, you could route from your aux outs to your passive ins, and then back to your aux in on your mixer.
Then you can use the knobs for each channel to determine how much of an effect, or no effect.
