what's the advantage of placing the monitor horizontally??

hi, i am looking for a pair of monitor. what's your suggestion? i saw a lot of stuido placing their monitor horizontally. why they do this? is it sound better? thx.

A lot of studio monitors are really designed to be placed vertical. The result of placing them sideways is that the tweeter is closer (or further away) from your ears than the bassdriver. This does not help balance the sound in most cases.
Unless your monitors are too high on your desk (the tweeters should be as high as your ears when you're sat down) i would not recommend putting them on their side.
Some monitors are designed to lay on their side and still sound good.

THe reason you see some speakers placed on their sides is because
when the woofers are towards the inside they provide better low frequency summing and stereo imaging provided if they are designed to sit either way.

for example: the makie HR824 are designed to be placed on their sides.

Don't listen BB Sound, ieism is the man.

BB Sound if you've got your 824s on their side then you're not using them the way they were designed to be used, in fact you'll probably find that you'll get a much better sound placing them on stands about a foot above your head tilting slightly downwards with a 30degree angle between each monitor in relation to your listening position. (ie 60 degrees)

Ieism, before you go blowing cash on expensive monitors do some home work into accoustically treating your room, it's inexpensive to do a decent job and really makes all the difference to your mixes.

dos.. I was not trying to be right in this nor was I telling kwokkin
to buy the mackies.. I was just answering his question as to why some studios have their monitors placed on their sides. thats all.
I never suggested he go out and BUY them.




and I have mine on their sides because ive done my testing in my work enviroment and they are at best on their side for my room accustics.


I have each one on a sand filled stand with auralex pads for each and they are at ear level,perfect for me and the sound I get from them in this position. And I find my mixes translate well with my set up like this.

but you are right, he does not have to listen to me.

You should only place your speakers horizontally if they were designed to be placed that way. Otherwise, don't waste your money on good monitors, if you wanna make them sound like ish.
