I hear what ddot is saying. I own their 2channel mixer....I think I paid $40-50 for it.
But I go back and forth with the idea of buying low until you get more advanced. I always tell people that start out playing keys to get a cheap $100-$150 yamaha or casio keyboard. When they start talking about spending $300 on up, I tell 'em to keep saving for a good/professional board. I say that because depending on what equipment you get, there's a point where you should just say,'ok, keep saving and get something that will last a long time and I'll be happy with it' It's good to 'grow into' your equipment. That's why I chose the MPC2000xl even though I've never worked with a sampler. I just knew what I wanted to be able to do. I went back and forth about getting a less well known version/brand/model. But then I was like, why pay $500 -$700 on something that eventually I'm going to be unsatisfied with....might as well bite the bullet and save to get something that's reputable. I'm happy with my choice and it's forcing me to learn stuff I didn't expect to learn.
It's different for everybody, but I think you gotta reach a point when it comes to spending $100's where you just don't low ball equipment. I think you gotta know that you want the equipment and will use it. I used to buy cheap stuff and then want to get rid of it cause it didn't give me a good sound or it wasn't easy to work. Now since I know I'll use the stuff, I just try to get good equipment either used or by just saving the money.
