There is an old version of Pro Tools Free around.
Look for it at the Digidesign website.
Of course, it's limited, but it works.

If you're on Windows XP the free version won't work, if you're on an older OS then PT free is a good way to find out if PT is for you, it's basically just an 8 track version of PT Le. But to answer your question, no, PT won't work without digi hardware.
