mpc to 4 track recorder

Hey has anyone ever track out their beats from an MPC to a 4 track cassette recorder?

probably not since last century


the four tracks, not enough and if you bounce over, you get added hiss each bounce. not recomended in 2009/ 2010 lack of midi sync not good look either

Yeh i see what u mean..yeh i was just curious to see if people still do for some purposes other than gettin great quality..maybe someone wants lo fi..idk jus curious. LOl

What I do sometimes for real tape saturation versus a plug in is run the 2-track stereo mix into my old tape deck that use to record my dj mixtapes then run it into the daw afterwards




run it a little in the red and get that tape saturation, just use the good quality tapes,, good if ya want to play around with that kind of sound

yeh i see what u mean i was wondering if people do that. Use it more as an effect than actual like mixing down and what not...u have a cool setup by the way man

yeah, like ableton live has some cool saturation effects in it but not the hiss, i mean if ya want the tape hiss

I wanna get the setup off a table and get a three tier keyboard stand and put everything on it, then monitor stands on either side, and laptop standright and mic either to side on raise middle for standing, then could sit directely in middle and put monitors in the perfect position for a proper triangle, then will just have to have the turntables, mixer & serato on the side

that's the setup plan I'm working on, then maybe the cords won't seem so messy.

Could you possibly explain to me how you could do it though? I just bought a 4 track cassette recorder and I'm trying to figure out how to record from my MPC into the 4 track. I have an unusual/confusing set up I guess so I need some help.

well if it's not enough, then oh well... cause you only got 4.

assign and group stuff to your individual outputs and rig 4 of the tracks (or how ever many you need up to 4) to the tape deck... for example,
track 1 - snares, hats, cymbals, and high toms if they have high attack
track 2 - samples and chops etc
track 3 - kick drums, bass drops like 808s etc, and floor toms etc.. you could even run the high band of the eq down on this channel, and if you are running an external non bass synth then put your bassline here too.
track 4 - bassline, or external mono synth.

also, about recording to the tapes. i have a tape recorder that has rca in and outs. what i do is record the outs of my MPC to the recorder. get the sound on the tape....then i record into my daw. i use it like a master effect, if you wanna call it that.

well if it's not enough, then oh well... cause you only got 4.

so you suggest putting spectrumwise similar stuff on the same channel?
how about the opposite of doing that? (put kicks and hats on 1, bass and cymbals on 2 etc) id guess this wil leave you more opportunity to EQ stuff!

yeah it's cause of the EQing.. when you record onto the tape you are recording at max volume without clipping on all channels.. right? So when it comes down to tweaks to get the 4 tracks to fit in properly .. this is happening during playback and if you need to RQ a channel... why would you want the same eq to effect the hats and bass? know what I mean? lets say you neet to turn down the highs and a bit of the mids on the bass? your hats are ****.

I guess it doesn't matter when it's gonna come out sounding like it was recorded on a 4 track anyways.

You can have MIDI sync on a 4 track... Only probelem is you turn it into a 3 track as track 4 will become the sync track.
Essentially you can squeze 4 tracks out of it by boucing 2 tracks on to 1 track leaving the other two then free.

That's what the red and black box on my shelf is Works a treat... Stripe the tape and off we go



It's cool to some times work with the 4 track for a change.. The Fostex has a 8 input mixer which is nice, the MIDI can be synced to the tape and the 4 track can concentrate the stuff you can't MIDI like guitars. vox etc

I don't see much point in using a MPC with a 4 track if all you are tracking is errm the MPC and nothing else...I mean what's the point? The MPC already has it's own mixer, FX and ish Just record the stereo out.

Now days I do pretty much what BG Beats said in that if I want that tape tone (And I DO like the hiss) I will record the main mix out from the mixer into the 4 track as a stereo mix then back to a DAW or something.
