sampling reel to reel?

Hi
Just wondering, if i got a reel to reel tape player and got some old reel to reel tapes, could i samples the individual tracks of those tapes? and if so how would i do it (separate the tracks)?

only if it was a multitrack reel to reel playing multitracked tapes. If you get a 2 track tape all you can separate is stereo.

what id be doing if i were you is playing samples into the Reel to Reel (recording on the Reel to Reel you playing some samples on the MPC)

you can saturate the gain input stage and get some genuine tape saturation goodness into your sound. like anything its not a magic fix all but if you experiment you might like some of the sounds/effects.

You could also Use the Reel to Reel to make Old school Tape Loops, the sample that to the MP to get some Analog warmth.
If the loop is too big for the reels (like an 8 measure thing or so) just use a Mic stand to take up the slack, It's how the $h!t was done before samplers.
Don't forget to use the Edit/unload (if it has one) to release the Capstan and pinch roller, I got Mad Tape Skills.

thanks for the replys guys, just wondering what everyone was talking about kayne gettin access to reel to reel tapes and sampling off em. Are these the original recordings, not the reel to reel releases everyone bought in the stores back then?

yeah tape loops can be fun. the first "sampler" was a Mellotron which ran form tape loops. you can get some interesting things happening with tape loop experimenting.

as for Kayne, i dont know or care. im on my own trip.

If you got a label willing to fork out the dough then why the he!! not do that.

The various models of reel-to-reel machines truly make for fascinating sampling possibilities. From the basic ones in radio stations and small independent audio duplicators to the monsters in some of the older, huge studios it's all a great education in the evolution of music and audio recording. A real challenge to mix and sample instruments.

The whole "Kanye probably gets the original session tracks to sample" was just a theory, I myself don't think that's what he does but to answer your question, if he did have access to the original recordings then yeah they would be the multi track tapes not the stereo masters.

That whole Kanye reels thing is a myth. Most of those old record labels dont keep the session tapes, they keep the final 2 track master. It is possible to sample off a reel to reel tape session though. Let's say you got a high school jazz band reel, say 8 track reel to reel. for the sake of argument, let's say you want to sample the bassline in a song from their reel. Solo the bass track and sample it from the main outs of the mixing console. You can do the same with any track on the reel.

you know what, i have an old reel to reel in my basement. ive had it for like a year, and i have a bunch of reels too. Ive never brought it into the studio though, just because i dont have any extra room. maybe i should make room...............
