RME Babyface

Does anybody have any thoughts on this piece of kit. Looks like an Apogee Duet killer. I wish it had a bit more ins and outs though.

I've got a fireface 400 which sounds fantastic and with build quality to match, can highly recommend rme

I actually plan on getting an RME Fireface UC pretty soon. Saw this and it looked intriguing but just not quite enough connectivity. I'm sure it smokes though.

the reason the Duet is so popular is the sound, I had a Fireface 800 and the sound is just not there..something weird going on with the high frequency range

Well, users using Snow Leopard my have an "opinion" or two. I don't know if this will affect this device though.

I've had the Duet and a Fireface 800, and to me the Fireface 800 sounded better. I also use the Ensemble nearly everyday, and though it and the Fireface 800 sound different (using all ins and outs), to me they sound about equal quality. Neither sound like the higher end Apogee and RME converters (or even better stuff from other companies). I guess it's subjective.

it winds up boiling down to... how much you wanna spend on the piece? and how fast will it pay for itself?

it seems like.. you can get middle of the road stuff and then to get slightly higher quality it triples or quadruples in price...

Right. I get to listen to a lot of gear because I harass the local studios because I know most all of the staff in them, but I personally can't see spending all that money for something marginally different or better....especially not for my humble uses. I'm usually more impressed by the way their consoles or outboard gear sounds, or the way their basses or guitars and mics sound, compared to the stuff most "humble setups" are using than their converters. There is a difference sometimes though, it becomes obvious when you compare budget gear to high-end gear, obviously. They aren't doing Hip Hop or dirty Electronic genres either though.

forgot about echo... they had some good stuff. I always wondered how their old 20 bit interfaces worked... I have a feeling it gets bumped down to 16bit in the DAW as it's recording etc...

Also with something like audio interfaces, stability and compatibility isuues comes into the picture. RME are known for having rock solid drivers and stability. So buying a good piece to start with can keep you from having a lot of problems right off the bat. I speak with first hand experience... MOTU, cough.

it's funny you say that... because I have heard the same thing but the other way around... motu being solid and rme being buggy

MOTU solid, and RME buggy? really? Funny indeed. I have had some serious issues with a couple MOTU devices. But what works rock solid for one person might be a disaster for someone else. Different system, specs, different this, that, Etc... I have heard a few people have had decent results with MOTU. But I have heard countless people having exceptional results with RME. Personally I have had it with MOTU. I'll see how the RME Fireface UC works out for me though.
