Yamaha HS80M vs. KRK RP8

What studio monitors sound better? Yamaha HS80M's or KRK RP8's?

first: define "better"
second: why do you think a studio monitor should sound "good"
third: if you play scheisse music through better speakers it will still sound terrible...

just joking - please go and inform yourself why a monitor should rather be sounding "flat" than "good" if "good" means lots of bass and lots of volume.
both speakers are nice for there respective price. the krks seem to have more bass, but the yamahas are much more accurate to my ears. if you have a chance then listen to the speakers for a while before you buy them. take some of your favorite musik that you know every note of, some of your own material and some classic tracks and then make sure all the speakers are set to neutral positions before you try. some musicstores eventually present some speakers with better settings than others because they want to sell the "better" sounding one. listen at different volumes and if possible at your own spot, because at the shop it always sounds different.

They have a common factor, they require the matching sub to get the proper balance in their sound.

Your current point of reference as well as your room will be major factors with either one, especially since they are 8's.

The Yamahas have slightly better transient response, but sound a little boxier than the KRKs.

Both sets are sort of mid range of the budget options. If I HAD to go with one or the other (and I'm glad I don't), I'd probably lean toward the Yams all else being equal. If one set was a chunk cheaper that might win me over though.

go with the yamahas. the krks aren't as flat as monitors should be... they add some warmth to the sound which can get tricky to EQ properly on. and for those that claim that the yamahas don't have enough bass... you can adjust that on the back... it's easy to suit them to your room.

one of the reasons i got the hs80m's over the rp8's are the room controls on the back. you can attenuate the bass if it's too boomy - the krk's don't have this option. this turned out to be very handy in my small room.

i've read people say they don't have enough bass but in my experience this is not true. they don't have this hyped hi-fi bass sound (unlike the alesis monitor one i used a while ago) but you can hear even the lowest sub bass pretty well.

overall i'm pretty pleased with the yammies, but i haven't used the krk's so i can't recommend one over the other.

@boogaloo What are the dimensions of your room please. Im thinking of buying a pair of HS 80s but Im hesitant because of the size the room i plan to use it in. The room is about 3meters by 4. Im willing to put in few bass traps.

this sounds interesting, i need to try the yamas
