Speaker stands

Hi, hope I'm in the right forum area for this question. Basically I have always just had studio monitors sitting on my desk. I'm about to buy some speaker stands for the first time from the internet. The ones which seem the best to me, which are only a few inches high and would sit on my desk, have an overall lower base size of 13"x9.5" and the actual base which the speaker sits on is 8"x8".

My speakers are about 12"x14". I asked the guy whether the smaller stand would be ok (im not familiar with stands) and he sounded very knowledgable and told me his 12"x12" speakers sat on them fine. I'm not too convinced though... can anyone here let me know if it is essential that the base that the speaker sits on is the same surface area or larger as the speaker itself? If so/not why?

Also, if this is ok, would it cause any problem using the mopads between speaker and stand too?

The size is fine but I would get some big tall stands that actually go all the way to the floor, other wise your desk will resonate still although it won't be as bad as just placing the speakers straight on the desk and the mo pads also help.

A good stand also should be able to be filled with lead shot or sand, this is to get rid of resonances in the stand.

Just get ones that are the right height and preff have floor spikes
