New I-Mac

New I-Mac

Howdy
Am looking into upgrading to a 27" I-Mac and wanted your opinion on if its worth getting one with a Duo core or a quad core...
I know logic takes advantage of multi-core processors but realistically all I do is sample into logic and run my effects in there...with a vst or two every now and then, plus vocals
What solution do you guys feel would be the best?

Core Duo is absolutely fine for most home studio environments.

If anything, increase the onboard RAM to at least 4GB and you'll be good to go.

C2D is good enough, but quad core.won't hurt either for future proofing purposes.

Hey Bro,

Just got an iMac 21.5" wit a dual core and it is plenty...running pro tools and maschine on it and it works fantastic. IMO u should see if you can get a demo one from a guitar center cause thats how i got mine and it was the 1TB HD for the 500GB price. 27" would be just too much screen honestly. Not worth the dough it cost for about 5 more inches of viewing space. But thats just my take on it. Its a great computer, you should be happy if you got one...Peace

If you are going as far as getting a 27" i mac.... why would you even consider getting the dual core CPU? obviously get the best internal components apple will let you pick because you want those 27 inches being usable for as long as possible.

I have an imac duo and it runs perfectly, it's just the screen on these things. Even using the screen saver when not in use my screen got some burn in within about a year or 2. That's just with 2yrs of constant 7+hr everyday of using it. You might not use it as much, but it's just something to think about. Looking back I wish I would've gotten a mac pro cause apple wants $800 for the replacement screen for my imac 20", where if I would've had a mac pro I could've just bought another screen for less than half apple's replacement cost. Again it'll work fine and I'd go for the quad just so it'll be compatible longer, but from my experience I'd just suggest something where you can switch/repair/replace components a little easier. 800 to replace a 20" screen? wtf? you can buy a few 27 inch computer screens for that price.

Exactly! No typo $800. The apple service guy at the apple store even took me aside and quietly suggested I find a dead imac and jack the screen. :lol:

If I worked at the store I would have told you to build a hackintosh... I cant believe 800 to replace a screen. And them getting burned in after a year or two with only 7 hours a day use? I run a pair of 22 inch acer (shit brand) screens 24 hours a day for the past 3 years and they haven't faded, lost a pixel, nothing... and there are 3 smokers always here which isn't helping my already dusty as hell basement.

I have an older 2.16 C2Duo and it works fine...that said it's a 20" and that's plenty big for me- can't even imagine working on a 27" all the time :shock:


But! If you can afford it, the mac pro's are worth looking into...like Fast Track said, I wish I knew what I know now and got a Mac Pro to begin with!

If you have an imac that gets affected by a lightning strike and the ethernet port goes out? Guess what- you need a new logic board!

Using an imac, but want to get into hardware based plugins like the powercore? Too bad...the FW bus on the imac can't run that AND an interface and you can't add another FW bus like you can on the Pro... You're stuck with the ports you have...

Just playing Devil's advocate here :D
