Traded my MPC 1K for a Roland SH-101

I think I get the better deal here, SH-101's don't pop up very often here in Colorado.

So I'm going to test it/pick it up tomorrow, is there anything specific I should be checking for? Anyone with an SH-101 wanna share any advice/pointers?

I don't know how much a MPC1K goes for used but the SH-101's used price should be between 300-350GBP

Any way check every slider works and doesn't badly crackle, check the keys and check the damn thing actually plays in tune over CV/Gate as some times it can go out of calibration..The SH-101 is not DCO but VCO

Though they are very strange for the time as they generally are very reliable and don't suffer that much from any tuning issues but it's good to check everything

I don't know about a good deal cos if I sold my MPC then I would be screwed as I wouldn't have anything else to sequence on..on the other hand I would trade my Wavestation + some cash for a 101...I love the 101 and SH09

Yeah man you def got a good deal. But it's a totally different instrument, which will force you to become a different type of musician.. (Im saying this as if it was your only instrument) if youve got a bunch more gear then you'll find ways to incorporate it.

enjoy that thing, learn it. get a manual if you dont have one.

THEN, get another MPC and sample/trigger it!

I think the guy who traded for the mpc got the better deal, sh101 are not that rare and imho with 1k can be done way more, tbh both of them are totally different things.

Agree..unless it's one of those Red or Blue SH-101's in which case you can sell for silly money on the bay and then get a normal grey one lol

I'd say you have a pretty decent trade there. I've heard that it's a good acid synth, so you can get something similar to that 303 sound without decimating your bank account. Plus, it's analog! What's not to love about that?

SH-101 is nice, but it's a one-trick pony... it will get old soon compared to the MPC which you can use daily with different results...

Good trade I think, the value of SH-101's over here in england are rocketing up which is pissing me off. They would go for around £300 a year ago, now your lucky enough if you'll win a bidding war on ebay for it going no less than £450-550 (red and blue models are fkin ridiculous!). Anything Roland & Analog & 80's is a good investment, because they seem to be going up in price all the time, even Junos now are looking more unattractive, some are selling for like £600 I mean cmon!

The difference being the SH101 does not depreciate as the MPC1K does.

OP got a better deal. And its not a one trick pony. It has bass, leads, and every sound the on 808, the SH-101 can do except for the cowbell.

it's still too early to say that about the mpc1000. while the mpc1000 has gone down some in value in the used market recently, it may rise again in value in the future. at some point in the early 90's analog synths from the 80's could be found for cheap [before they rose again in value in the later 90's]... the same thing could happen with the current MPC models if you think about it... it's already looking like AKAI is more interested in releasing MIDI controllers and such [instead of expanding and improving their MPC line of products]... in another 10 years or so, due to a lack of companies releasing hardware samplers and lack of stores stocking them, the mpc1000 and 2500 could shoot back up to retail price in the used market... this is just a prediction though, and i'm not psychic.

By the time that happens, the SH101 will be worth a mint.

SH-101 is only a single oscillator, but it does get some great sounds. Great sample and hold. And it has CV so you can now start pouring all of your extra cash into a modular setup and trigger it with the101.

Or just get a MIDI to CV/Gate convertor and rock it from the MPC.
