ASR-10

anybody have reviews on this machine? thinking about selling my mpc and trying it out. ive been using fl studio now, so if i dont like it, it wont make a big difference.. but yeah, anyone have any reviews? pros, cons?

From what I've read and heard the non-distructive chop function is a nice feature, good filters and fx and gritty sound.
But the sequencer doesn't seem to be as tight and easy to use as the mpc's sequencer.

And of course the most significant difference is the keyboard vs beatbox thing. Keys or pads is really a personal thing.

Many of us use one with our MPC's due to the fact the ASR-10 sequencer isnt that great or intuitive.

thanks fellas.. and the sequencer wont be that big of a deal cause most of the time i use 1 sequence or i could just record each one into fl

@drunkmonkey im just specifically lookin for problems that it usually gets cause im lookin for a machine that doesnt have that much problems

Well first things first, it will probably crash from time to time. Second is the interface. It will take some time to get used to and it will slow you down at first. Just accessing functions can be laborious, and also not being able to see waveforms, only seeing one parameter at a time, etc. Third you have to deal with the migraine known as SCSI.

interface isnt a problem, once i get it, thats it.. and what about the scsi? what goes wrong with it?

well i dont even have scsi, and i get along fine, i dont even know what its for lol. im getting my memory expanded so thats gonna be sick. i personally like not being able to see the waveforms, because when i can see them i usually chop based on what i see, but my music ends up being better when i chop from what i hear. and my floppy disks sometimes **** up, they say "DISK DATA CORRUPTED", and what i do is just keep trying to load it, and usually it works, sometimes it doesnt. so yeah there are some bugs but once you learn the machine, the bugs dont really bother you, or me at least.. maybe cause i save my work pretty frequently. also, you don't need to use floppy disks, you can somehow hook it up so you use cd's or just save it into a hard drive, i guess thats what scsi is, im good with floppies though

tbh, i dont know what scsi is either . but damn, that disk problem happend to me once. from then on, i saved my beats on fl too. i dont think not being able to see the waveforms wont be that bad cause im using my ears rather then what i see.

yeah exactly. and yeah, if you record your beats to fl as you go along, you shouldnt run into many problems at all

I'm also interested in an ASR10, have been for a little while, but drunkmonkey isn't sampling difficult because of how low the memory is ?

32mb is like 240 seconds or something mono

isnt 2mb like 11 seconds mono or something like that? thats more than enough for me

It is a FULL SAMPLER/EDITOR/WORKSTATION.


as opposed to what mpc's do, which isn't really a FULL BLOWN sampler.


It sounds ACCURATE as compared to AKAI's more colored sound.

like the fact that you can sample 30 seconds of audio, and "look" at different sections of that one sample on 61 different keys without copying any real audio, thus eliminating wasted ram...


ONLY ONLY ONLY drawback.... the sequencer is bunk IMO... its definitely workable no doubt... but no instant time correct, no swing, no 99 tracks per instrument etc...

Keep your MPC's, and MIDI them up with the ASR... rack even if you have low space
(the rack is actually more gangster because it comes with 8 outs, as opposed to having to buy a 300 dollar expander.

it comes with 2mb (i think), which is 31 seconds mono. and half of that stereo.
but you can get the expansion for like 30 bucks or less, and it gives you something insane like 250 seconds or something, i forget
