it is the tact switch kind of buttons right? maybe there could be a loose cable or something like that... I have a fostex one somewhere around here which is basically the same thing.

Which model? I use to have a 644 but upgraded to a 688 that I actually still use. I've been inside of it to resolder a contact or two but that's about all it needed anyway.

Could be a number of things. I guess opening it up will allow you to at least figure out what's going on with it.

Question: do you hear an internal motor running?

um, i dont hear anything at all. everything seems to light up correctly.....i noticed that there is a little steel pin spinning inside of the cassette housing....which i assume to be normal.......but, absolutely nothing when i press the transport buttons. :?:
maybe i will pop it open tomorow real quick and see if i notice anything unusual

Maybe it's time to put it to rest. This may also be the break you need to step it up a bit on the recording medium.

I personally still use my 688, but only for its mixer (the recorder still works however).

I haven't used the cassette recorder in that thing for quite some time now.
