akai s950 question...

so ive been messin with the 2kxl for about 2 weeks now (just got it), and im lovin it. I truly dont understand how some ppl prefer daw/midi controllers (fl studio) to mpc's, it makes no sense to me (but thats just my opinion i guess).

anyway, im gettin an s 950 shortly to use with the mpc, mainly for 12 bit drums and filtering basslines and seperating the highs and mids. I heard real good things about the filters in the 950 also i hate the fact that u cant filter highs in the 2kxl (eq). Ill prolly be doing most my eq'ing with my turnatable mixer but...

my question is whats the best way to use the s950 with the mpc? I realize u can go midi out from the mpc to midi in in the s950 and trigger your samples that way. But i was thinking, would it be just as good to save the sounds onna floppy (or buy an scsi zip drive for the s950) and load up the sounds in the mpc. I was thinking this way would be better for me because i dont have a mixing board (with cd burner, maybe a mackie, etc...). Im kinda confused as to how that would work when i go to save my song/sequences/sounds/programs. if i simply trigger the samples form my mpc that are on the s950, how would that work when i save my data?

when i save a project im working on i "save all sequences and songs" and "save all sounds and programs" as well. Would the sounds i am triggering in the s950 be saved? im a bit confused, any help would be great!

Just save your sounds on your S950 to their own floppy (or scsi device if you have SCSI).
Load that to your s950 when you load the corresponding mpc files and youll be good to go.
It's not rocket science.

s950 files are not compatible with the mpc2000xl

Triggering the s950 from the mpc is the way to go.

The thing I'm most concerned about is when I'm done with tracks, and I wanna burn them to a cd, I'm gonna have to buy a multi track recorder with a cd burner I'm thinking, right?

I had my eyes on a korg d1200...

I use a S900 with my MPC2000. Whatever I sample on the 900 I just resample it into my MPC (or other S samplers).

sampling it back into a 16bit sampler is fakin jacks. if you like your new sampler just use that.

No. Although the sample will become a 16bit sample in the MPC it will keep the "flavour" of the 12bit. Just the same principal as WAVE to mp3 and back to WAVE conversion. Lost informations cant be recreated.

And yes cause the sound of Samplers isnt the result of bitdepth alone. The pitchalgorithm is diffrent also the filter and the envelope is different than in the MPC. And then things like "one chop cuts the other" which is also possible in the MPC but you can only cut 2 other pads with one pad (not really usable for something like 8 or 16 chops). In the 950 you can set all the 16 chops to one output and each chop will cut the other 15 chops. Easy.

after a while you will sample only with nine fitty, and use the mpc only for sequencing.

how would that work?!

no, the sounds that are not held in the mpc will not be saved on the mpc when you save

the sequence data saying "play note C2 on midi channel 4 now" would be saved, and when you play it back then whatever is connected to midi channel 4 would play whatever it has assigned to C2. If that's the S950 again you'd get the same sound back. If it's something else on midi channel 4 then you'd get a different sound

Yeah I figured that the midi data would be saved, considering it's connected via midi, sorry for the dumb questions...they are kinda common sense if you take the time to think about it.

Like the other guys said, u'll get the most out of your s950 when u sample and chop inside s950 and sequence it with the mp.
