Do all different MPC models have the same MIDI pad layout?

so here's a simple question that i'm assuming the answer should be YES to, but you just never know...

since i've only owned an MPC2500 and a 1000, i'm wondering if all the earlier models also use the same exact pad layout [as in the default MIDI note assigned to each pad when you first turn the unit on]... this question would of course exclude using the chromatic function available in JJOS... for example, as soon as i turn on either of my MPCs the MIDI notes for the first 8 pads in BANK A are as follows:

PAD 01: 37 [C#1]
PAD 02: 36 [C1]
PAD 03: 42 [F#1]
PAD 04: 82 [A#4]
PAD 05: 40 [E1]
PAD 06: 38 [D#1]
PAD 07: 46 [A#1]
PAD 08: 44 [G#1]
etc, etc...

and i make keygroup programs in my S900 where i assign a single drum hit to each of those pads... what i want to know is... if i were to plug in any other MPC model into the S900 would the keygroup layout work the same without having to reassign any of the MIDI notes?? in other words, do all MPCs use the same MIDI pad layout? i just want to know if my sample disks will work if controlled with any MPC model... i assume they would, but just want to make sure... thanks...

The 2000classic has the same mapping when i create a new program. I guess the 3000 is also the same cause the MIDI notes represent the General MIDI Drummap notenumbers

The pads on the 2000 are just named "Pad1", "Pad2" etc. On the 3000 the Pads are named by the sound

Pad1 = Sidestick (GM notenumber 37)
Pad2 = Bass (GM notenumber 36)
Pad3 = Clsd Hat (GM notenumber 42)
Pad4 = Hat loose (this sound doesnt exist in the GM drummap so I guess thats the reason this Pad has notenumber 82 wich is empty in the GM drummap)

The MPC60 has a different order of sounds on the pads so I guess its mapping is differnt

Pad1 = HiHat (I guess its the open one)
Pad2 = Snare1
Pad3 = Snare2
Pad4 = Bass

yeah on the older OS it was closed HH, med HH, open HH, (those are all going to be found on the hihat pad but the slider does the sample switch)
then pads 2 3 and 4 are as you said...

then bank 2 is
DRUM1
DRUM2
DRUM3
DRUM4
DRUM5
" "
DRUM16

I just searched for a reason for the different layout and its simple: MPC60 was made in 1988. General MIDI standard was created 1991


I just realized I fond an answer without a question. This has nothing to do with the MPC padlayout

thanks for the input... is there a comparison chart or something where the differences in MIDI layout between the MPC models can be seen? if not, maybe we can all collaborate & put something simple together for the benefit of everyone on the forum... i was surprised at the fact that i couldn't find something like this after searching...

seems to be identical to the layout for the MPC1000 and MPC2500 as well...

ps: nice work with the graphics & all that, pete.

I would like to add, I believe the mpd16 is the same as the above banks 1 and 2 until you actually change it... though there is actually no way to tell on that controller alone... you would have to hook it to something else that you know the number of the sound you are hearing while pushing a pad.

Does anybody know why they chose that layout. Chromatic would seem like a pretty logical default

that is how the mv is set up as far as I remember... I would guess the 4000 would be also.

jjos2xl has chromatic

jjos1 i think has both chromatic and default as described above (differance between midi and drum track modes). something like that.

if someone has the MPC 60, could they please weigh in with the default MIDI layout on that?? and i'm also assuming that the MPC 60II would use the same layout as whatever the 60 has...

I will try and take a look tomorrow, yeah the mkii is the same... not sure about the various OSs though (2.12 and 3.1 are quite different in fact I believe the 3.1 gives 2 entire extra pad banks though I am not sure 100%)
