Shure 55S II Vintage Mic - Anyone used one?

I've been eyeing this mic for a while and I've been impressed with Shure mics for 13 years now. I'm planning to get it has anyone used one? And could you confirm the sound it produces. The packaging says it got that 50's rock and blues kind of tone, which caught me in the first place. Express your thoughts please.

I don't know if I've used the very latest version, but I used to sell this model and while I only tried it out in the store, I thought it sucked. It's really a fashion mic for stage. It's only still made because it was the "Elvis Mic" and guess what: Elvis was wack. Therefore, I only sold this mic to complete tools.

All that said, it's JMO, and even sucky mics can have their limited uses. Who knows, it might be just the thing to compliment a specific voice. Just make sure you can return it if you buy one. If you want a big badass dynamic that's great for voice and tons of other applications, you might drop a few more clams for a true studio classic: the RE20.

I recommend the Shure SM7b. I recorded 90% of our album with it and love it. The original mic in question looks like a gimmick to me.

Word, it does look good, I guess looks aint everything, thats why I wanted to know how was the sound, which is more important to me. I guess I gotta roll em high for a Neuman

Man I say get it, they are cheap, and you will have your own sound. Even if its a crappy sound, it will be a crappy sound that all these HD kids won't have! Just my opinion. If your going to break bread for a Neumann, but you like Shure, I've had nothing but good results with the Shure KSM-32... I've had it for 10 or 11 years. The KSM-27 is even cheaper though!

Man I say get the 50's mic. I had an old chrome broadcast mic that had a very unique sound. Slightly crappy, but right about now, I wish I still had it. Can't stand how everyone wants to sound HD now.

I copped the 55s II from Musician's Friend because they got the 45 day trial thing over there and if I don't like it, I can always change it for a Neuman later. I want to witness the sound myself. I'll report back in a week or two how it went.

Oh shnapp! Thanks for sharing that. I've been a fan of the Daptone sound for a while now, didn't know they worked with limited gear like that. Now I'm really inspired to try this mic.
