Triton Rack

So my friend let me hold his triton rack for a while because he just bought a mtoif rack so he wants to mess with it for a while (not that it matters). While its here i might as well put some use to it. I'm completely new to midi btw.

Now i got midi out from the rack to midi in to the mpc and vice versa. I know i have to switch from drum to midi: 1A on the mpc. With my headphones plugged into the rack i hear sounds, which is great, but i have no clue where to start when i comes to recording a sequence. (btw when i have my heaphones plugged into the mpc i hear nothing) when i press play on the mpc it already has random sounds on the sequence. and i cant hear the tempo click. and if i press record i can record over it but it will just record over the sounds already there, not on beat at all because of the no tempo click (of course).

anyway, does anybody use a triton rack with their mpc that can shed some light on my situation.
do i have to set something up through the rack as well as the mpc?
am i supposed to trouble shoot with my headphones in the mpc? (am i supposed to record sequences that way?)
the steps i said i did are the only things i did. i have not "tweeked" or messed with anything else.

You are totally on the right track.

First suggestion, you don't need the midi out from the rack back into the mpc.

Of course not because the rack is making the sounds. You can't hear the 'tempo click' because it is coming from the MPC. If you want to hear both at the same time, you have to mix the two signals (from the rack and the mpc) together.

Well, you've mostly got it but you are misunderstanding. They are not 'not on beat' simply because the metronome is silent...as I said above, the only reason you can't hear the metronome is because you are not listening to it. They are off beat because YOU can't hear the metronome...also, quantisation in the mpc will help 'lock' the notes to the beat. (edit: after thinking about it i think you do understand this, you just want to be able to hear the metronome).
So if you want to play 'on beat', then you either need to listen to the mpc AS WELL AS the rack, or, a cop-out I often use, is create a track by setting your quantisation to 1/8 and then holding one note on note repeat for the whole length of the loop. Now, leave that track alone and you have just made your own metronome track. Of course this can get a little unwieldy with melodic sounds and sticking in key, etc.

Bottom line: either create your own 'click track' using the note-repeat, or get a mixer and listen to both devices at the same time.

alright i see what you mean about the tempo situation. thanks a lot. now how about the problem i have that before recording anything there are already random sounds in the sequence? if you need me to make this clearer i will.

You definitely need to make that clear because a totally 'new' sequence on your mpc will be completely blank.

Sounds like you are inputting notes without knowing it or not using blank sequences.

is there a way to keep what youve recorded then go to other sounds to add to what you layed down? say i recorded some drums then i want to move on to add something else to it. when i change the sound the drum pattern i recorded changes to what ever sound i just changed it to with the same pattern.

Yes you can do this, but I won't be much help here because it's all got to be set up in the Triton. I'm sure there is a way to create a performance patch that allows you to use more than one program on different midi channels. I don't know what it would be called (performance? setup? preset?...they use lots of names), but I'm sure it's in the Triton manual. You would then just set the MPC tracks to the different channels to access different instruments.

Yes this is possible but again, you need a mixer so you can hear both the Triton and the MPC with samples in it.

i believe the triton has a combo mode? press that and picke what sounds you want in mixer view of triton. youtube it bro
