Mic Stands

Just bought a mic. Im getting it on Friday.

Now I need a mic stand. Anything I really need to know before I just go out and buy anything?

Im pretty sure I want something with a boom but Im also limited on space at home.

Suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone.

What kind of a mic? Studio condenser, hand-held dynamic or? Some studio mics come with their own cradles, what about yours?

Get a telescope boom. Saves space. And don't buy the cheapest, they will break. I've got a couple of these, they are excellent, they take abuse plus there are spare parts available, in case you succeed in damaging them:

You can also use it without the boom.

My advice? Don't get those cheap ****. They will fall over and hit various protruding parts of your vocalist's face, in succession, and then hit the floor as they move away in agony. I've seen it. The threading in cheap ones often give out too. You get what you pay for. Try to get heavy ones that can support larger mics, even if you don't have a big ass Telefunken or such. You want it to be able to support a microphone, with it's shock mount, and heavy gauge cable, plus gravity. So, make sure it has a sturdy base, or get one with a long heavy boom and tripod legs. That, and try to avoid casters that cannot be locked, unless you have a reason for them.
