Besides sampling...Anyone know a sound module or site that has a good number of quality hits and stabz?

^ yep, the mophatt is good for this. i use mine for that purpose, a lot of the sounds are exactly that.

Also check out the available expansions for the E-mu modules, some are focused on drums.

Looking good.
Is the soundfont any good compared to the original sound module?

no. unless you want a half-ass emulated version of a piece of hardware. the actual module sells for about $100 these days on ebay and has a few knobs for tweaking the presets on the fly... you can't go wrong with the actual mo phatt unit itself for the price.

sampling is a good way to go too but takes bit more time. I have a permant folder called "hits", because i very frequently find cool hits that i dont end up making a beat out of because there really isnt anything else in the song, or im just not feeling it at the time, but its a quaility hit. so i just dump it into that folder for later.

but there are some decent sample cds out there for this kind of thing - cant remember names of the top of my head, but i found some string hits that are generic enough, but still pretty ill.

if you have a keyboard, you can make em yourself too. its actualy not that hard. its just stacking sounds, maybe transposing a few sounds up or down until you get the right mix. quick attack, short durations. layer some bass for a thud, mix in sounds you may not think would work. like for orchestra hit, try a string, oboe, piano, +moog bass...........any combo really, experiement. sample the hit, chop it sort of like you would a sample............chords in there too will give you a richer texture. like say you use a regular minor chord on the piano, then take the oboe, transpose it up and use one of the notes in the chord, then take the bottom note for the bass, on the strings you might use the same chord but maybe double it up with higher octave of that chord. i think you get the idea. this works well if you seuqnece it. so for example create 1 bar in mpc, on the 1:00:00 is where you record your hit. just let the 1 bar loop around and keep layering sounds on top. once you got a good hit, just sample the output.

Thanks guys, most useful forum on the net.

Besides the sequencer (which I will rarely if ever use), does anybody know the difference in workflow between the MP-7 and Mo Phatt? Was interested in exploring the super beats mode as well, for some inspiration from time to time.

Worth forking out the extra $$$ for the command station?
I havent used it but from looking at it, the command station seems to have everything laid out and easy to access.

Those 16 knobs on the MP-7 give you access to the all the synth features the Mo' Phatt has under the 4 knobs x 4press feature select button.

Of course, I'm biased because I have one. The MP-7 was my first machine I ever made a complete song on. The workflow is all most exactly the same but the sequencer is actually very good and give you a peek into ASRXPro type sequencing.

So yeah, even after all these years I am STILL finding excellent use for the sounds in my Turbo Phatt. I've used many inside Beatmaker 2 (ios).

It isn't worth getting the stand alone Emu modules unless they're super cheap. There are idiots now selling and buying the Mophat, the MP7, etc for 500-700 USD.

I'm not sure if some of you know this but with a little bit of looking around, you could get the full patch dumps of the Emu sound flash roms that can be loaded off your Emu E series rack sampler for a significant fraction of the price.

I picked up a Proteus 2000 a while back on eBay w/ two ROMs (composer and one I forget) for less than $200.
Ended up just using it to make my own stabs/hits/etc. There are a lot of other things it can do that I hardly touched
so I ended up selling it for profit to an old-head that needed it's transposing (or scale/key locking?) abilities or something like that.

Pretty nice piece of gear and I bet they can still be had on the 'cheap'. Just one path to go down, my fwend.

Here's an example of what I mean for anyone else curious: http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-GB-EMU-E4-INT ... 2208822504

Basically, what this guy is selling are the sample rom dumps of what seems to be virtually every Emu sample/program rom simm on a hard drive. So they should have all the same tweakable parameters available, unless I'm some how ill informed.

Yep, I got it w/ 1 ROM inside for $150 a few years back.
Went on ebay, got more ROMS. All 4 slots full now.

I've been eyeing the Roland Integra 7 for years now. That thing is like the be all end all in the
sound module world (imo). Just a want, not a need.
