I own a DX9 so can't comment too much on the DX7. My DX9 does low sub, spooked-up freq's, mellow vibes, sharp vibes, cut-through-highs and digital farting ok but not the fat, fat deep crunchy, biting bass that my analogues or the s950 can do. But then, with enough careful programming and fx you can make it sound how you want (apparently the DX7 is renowned as being a **** to program though).
The DX7 has more to it than the DX9 so maybe you can get what you need from it, but I
personally wouldn't recommend it for just bass, but whadoo I know?
My DX9 is great for beautiful, full-sounding pads, fizzy, glassy highs, stabs, etc though.
Tell ya what though, you can sample virtually anything and then play about with layering it on top of itself, splicing other sounds on top of it, transposing it, bit crunching it, filtering it, etc, etc, etc till you get a fat bass.
Mess with your sampler enough and you'll find joy. A good place to start is by using a saw wave and then start layering more wave shapes on top of it. Experiment with wave shape layering and the low pass filter.
