monitor reviews problem

Well, this isnt another "which speakers should i get" thread. I just want to say i've read reviews for hours and hours looking for a pair and was fixed on either the M-Audio BX8a, until I read that they crap out after 2-3 months, so I thought well, dont want to take my chances on those and then the Yamaha HS-50's, and i read tons of people saying either get the sub or just get the HS-80's. I literally have no room OR EXTRA CASH for the sub and so Im thinking of just going with the KRK 5's Gen 2

On the Yamaha HS-50's though, the bass may not be that big of a problem to me, because Im not bass heavy in my music. but SO many people have the KRK's, so im thinking they may be "universally" good for pretty much anyone who creates hip hop.

I live 3 hours from the closest guitar center, but not sure if it would be better to buy a pair off eBay or buy retail price from GC

Would the "bass problem" on the HS-50's be a problem, or would it be "safer" to get the KRK's, which apparently everyone and their momma's use?

The m-audios are crap.
Yamaha, krk, or better will be fine.
Save up til you can get something decent, you will thank yourself.

Either way you decide to go you'll end up getting use to your monitoring environment and how your mixes translate to the real world. I've heard of guys mixing on 5" monitors without a sub and if I'm not mistaken Kev Brown uses a pair of HS 50M's with no sub (don't quote me on that ). Having a sub with 5 inch monitors makes things easier IMO but again will present the same scenario as having no sub being that you'll have learn how your mixes translate to the real world which means taking time to learn your monitors and how they sound in your room.

I started on a pair of M-Audio BX5a's with a sub. I now have the Yamaha HS80m's with the HS 10W sub. For me the HS 80M's by themselves are all I need to monitor the low end in my mixes...In fact when I engage and disengage the HS 10W sub there is very little difference in the low end (for most tracks) so generally I mix without the sub on.


If you don't have room for a sub I would recommend going with a 8" monitor. I can't really speak on the KRK's I haven't owned a pair. Hope this helps.

i have a buddy that produces and he only uses headphones (the same pair for over a year and 1/2 now actually) and his final mixes come out pretty good. he's learnt how to eq his stuff according to his headphones

im actually going to buy a pair of KRK 5's 2nd gen. may pick up the sub for them, but i'll have to hear them by themselves first. i've wanted a pair for awhile anyways

but like everyones said, you have to get used to what YOU have and how they TRANSLATE to other sound systems.

Just get a set and start mixing on them. Your ears will guide you to the monitors for you eventually.
