Analog OUT to Digital IN ???

Analog OUT to Digital IN ???

I got an old MD recorder from a friend of mine. His dad wanted to get rid of it so I said cool gimme.
The plan was to use the digital outs for pluging em into my MPCs digital IN, for sampling purpose... Unfortunatley my Analog in is busted, and I want some way of directley sampling stuff instead of loading off a CD or CF card, because of the workflow possibilitys.
Now the problem is that the MD recorders Digital outs are optical. :|
A guy at this electronics store Saturn ( I guess the german equivalent to Radioshack??)
actually suggested to try this:
Use the ANALOG OUTs of the MD recorder and plug em into the MPCs DIGITAL IN... ???
What do you think?? Can this even work? He said it "MIGHT work"

by the way:
The guy had no idea what an MPC is.. just sayin...

I dunno I guess he was just desperatley trying to be comptetent and sucked some old "solution" out of his tits.. :angry: :roll:
Just wanted to make sure he was wrong and I was right not listening to his "advice".

I use a coaxial to optical converter to run from my audio interface's coaxial out to my S3000 optical input. So u would need an optical to coaxial converter.

Was your coaxial out a Digital out? If so that's not what he was aking.

yes its a S/pdif coax output. The same thats on the mpc 1000/2500. It seemed to me the OP needed a way to sample from his md recorder into the mpc. Since his analog inputs are not functioning he either has to transfer sounds via usb/cf card or sample directly from the md via the digital optical out from the MD to the digital coaxial input on the MPC 2500. These are two different types of connections which would mean he needs the optical to coaxial converter. Am I missing something?

edit:I know my signal path is different from what he was asking. Just used mine as a similar example of how you can make a digital connection with different types of digital inputs/outputs. Hope im making sense. It sounds like the salesman wanted him to maybe run rca out from the MD into the digital input of the mpc. THat is a NO GO sir.

^Yes that's exactly what he wanted me to try. He also told me about the converters but said they're quite pricey, and that's not what I'm lookin for.. I'm on a tight budget..

Not sure which model of MPC you are referring too. If you have, like the 3000, S/PDIF in, you will need a switch box or converter. But before you do that, keep in mind that MD uses proprietary Sony compression (ATRAC) for recording. What you put in is not what you get out.

Somthing like this should be versatile:

"proprietary Sony compression (ATRAC)" need to google that real quick...
I've read in another thread, that people complain about the poor sound quality of MDs. I guess I'll have to see for myself how bad it really is.
Yet logically thinking; the MPCs AD/DA converters digitize the signal anyway so I don't see much of a problem in recording to and then from a digital source. Am I missing something??
