E-mu SP-1200 Versus Akai MPC3000LE (sound comparison video)

Nice to see and hear the comparison of these two hardware classics.

I've owned a 3k and loved it. I use to always want an SP but couldn't justify spending so much cash for one. The thing about the SP is that compared to the MPC's it only makes certain samples sound better like snares, and certain melodies.. I've been around both machines. To each their own tho..

yeah the drums sounded punchier on the sp, the 3000 sounded more buttery though... it's a pretty neat comparison because they do both sound completely different. The sp makes it seem like you used entirely different samples almost.

This was a novel idea. But, since the SP1200 was used to sample from the MPC3000, what we are hearing is the SP1200 "sound" imposed on samples already processed through the 3000's converters. So this is "MPC3000 vs MPC3000/SP1200" To truly hear the difference, I would have sampled the same source into both machines and created the same beat. Both machines sound great, though.

agreed in tht vid did not like the ring mod sound that came from the main sample on the sp, but that aint always the case with hi's as pete was getting some nice warm hi's on the sp. So think its how u use the maschine and shit like playing the sample in faster then pitching it down on the sp gives the somewhat magical effect that peeps speak of.

but love that smoove butter sound from the 3000.

Since I just added a 60 to my set-up, I would like to see this one as well.

I've got both. The MPC has much less bottom but beats the SP hands down in functionality. SP workflow is much much faster and fluid and I suspect this is where most of its popularity lies - no programs to deal with.

Sure. Can you upload a WAV to sample? That way, people can hear the control (wav) as well as the two processes.

I cant upload a .wav file right now, but I guess a simple downloaded drum break with some kinda basic melody sample will do for this test.

Or you could just make a skeleton beat, nobody is judging your skills, it's all about the difference in sound.

Anybody is welcome to contribute if they have both machines.

Well, I won't start making a beat but if someone can point me to a 16-Bit 44.1kHz Amen Break (or something suitably familiar) on the net, I'll be happy to sample it into both machines and loop it for 8 or 16 bars.
