small speakers like that can hardly be called "reference monitors". you won´t hear much of the lower frequencies.

if you want to be portable i recommend good (studio) headphones such as the beyerdynamic dt-770...

Depending on the room that isn't always a bad thing. Just because you can hear the bass doesn't mean it's being portrayed accurately.

@ goldenxscholars: I don't know what your budget is but I'd look at the smaller Genelec options. I've had the 8020s since I started, and in their size range I don't think there's anything better. I believe Adam also make a smaller monitor which would also be worth checking out.

I never knew there were USB studio monitors out there.

WTF?

Akai RPM3 USB monitor speakers are exactly the same speaker (besides the looks) as Alesis M1 320 USB monitor speakers. They are good for connecting to PC/ Mac, since you can just plug into USB. Note that it is not USB powered speaker, it comes with one power cord.
They are decent when they work (as I don't trust Alesis / Numark / Akai Pro's quality, as it seems that their product would not last more than a few years of light use...)
