Digital Mixers - Automation recall w/ the MPC/01V questions.

Check this out, I got this cat who wants to trade me my old 20 channel/8 bus Tascam console (which i dont even use, to big, & 2 channels need cleaning or something, its old) for a Yamaha 01V mixer, which for those that dont know is digital. So I defintley want to do it (at worst it will be like making $200), I checked it out its in perfect conditon, he got it working with automation recall which is dope, he got fades, panning all that stuff in the memory of his mixer, it recrods from midi out on his comp, problem is, hes using Cubase, any digital mixer users out there know if the MPC can trasmit this info via midi, or any 01V users know if I can just ride the faders during the mix and record my manual movements. Let me know.

yup, I'm pretty sure you can it is midi data, sysex or CC's, it might clog up your sequencer memory if you go nuts, but its a good trade for sure.

thing is, what kind of automation can the 3K transmit to the mixer...roadblocks. : )

I have a MPC3K and 01v.
I never use the automations since I use Pro Tools.
But, I think it can work.
However, as elmacaco suggsted, it might clog up your mpc sequencer.

Basically any sequencer can record and then play back the MIDI control info for the 01v, the problem is that hardware sequencer have a limited amount of memory to make use of and a lot already going on processor wise.
You could easily bog the MPC down with some extravagant automation but as long as you keep it basic it will work ok.
Ask him to let you try it out for two reasons;
1) to get an idea of how well it will handle the control
2) to listen to how your stuff will sound on the 01v to see if you like the way the mixer sounds.

What model is your analog mixer? the 01v's sell for $350-600 on eBay all the time.

well im picking it up tommorrow and the board is the Tascam 320b, it retailed for $8,000 when it was released. I got it for $300.

Heya homer do you know if I can record automation on ProTools with the 01v.

You can use any MIDI sequencer (hardware or software) to record and playback the automation on the 01v. It's just simple MIDI sys-ex, as long as you don't have a MIDI input filter turned on it will record the automation the same way it records MIDI notes and play it back on the assigned channel.
If you have a fast enough computer (since I assume you are using a LE system) the automation in PT is much better than the automation the 01v will offer.
I use to use (2)-01v linked together and controlled them with Cubase and PT, but ended up finding out that using a HUI or Mackie Control and writing the automation into PT was better and much easier to store.
The 01v will give a lot of functionality with the ability to internally route things and the added effects, so no matter how you look at it you will still get a good deal even if you don't use it's automation.

GOTAMN! your my new go to man here. so you tossed your O1Vs for the mackie control...Im assuming you were using one for recording and one for playback from your tracker. I could probably use the 01V for playing back my PT tracks if anything.

I originally used them to track to a from my DA-88's, that's why I was using the 2408 as a router and the DTP to sync it all up.
Then I just started upgrading things, new monitors, new converters, pre-amps etc and started using the computers more with more plug-ins.
Still pretty much a heavy sampler 3-ASR-10 (2-rack 1 key) 2000xl studio, Triton LE w/ sample card, ESI-2000-turbo, Tr-808, Moog Prodigy and Rhodes controller. Everything else is softsynth.

Im going to go get it now, thanks for the insight. If anything I'll play with it for a month or so and see if it fits into my scheme. If not I'll sell it.

its the old school one, i been playing with it all day. sounds real good that for sure, havent got any automation to work yet tho.

You will need to give up a set of MIDI I/O to record and playback the automation and also tell the 01v which to use the MIDI ports or serial ports.
Are going to try the MPC or PT to record and control the mixer?

i got the old one too.. i havent even tried the automation on it yet.. maybe when i get a lil more technical with it.. let me know how it turns out..

I dont even see midi automation mentioned in the MPC3K manual. You know in song mode, its like what the **** am I going to automate?

I think I might just sell it.
