I'm trying really hard not to sound like a Maschine fan boy here but IMO this thing is around just for competition, to make Akai look "still in the game" and to look prettier and that's it . And to take the edge off the fact that the Ren is gonna cost $1499 .

The only thing that interests me about it is that's it's an inch think .

When I travel I always have a good spec'd laptop with me and this is portable, I can really use something like this, I want it.

I personally don't like the look of these new machines at all. This one looks even worse than the ren... yikes!

To me they look like cheap toys that came out of toys'r'us or something.

And what's up with those cheap looking pseudo style q-link knobs etc.? I thought MPC's were supposed to look cool.

Glad i got my 2000xl's, 2500 and 60. Someday i'm gonna cop a 3000 as well and then keep them all until i die. I'm more than happy with these machines.

Not impressed at all with this Nukai garbage.

PS: Take my post with a grain of salt, it's just my personal opinion.

agreed one hundred percent, they look real cheap and lame. im really hoping that due to the release of these "mpc's" it makes the price of the ppl gettin rid of their 2000's 3000's 60's, etc, go way down. hopefully ebay and craigslist will be loaded with real mpc's.

agreed, and auctions only! no buy it now unless it's a reasonable price!

I think part of the reason peeps don’t like the mpc studio as it is borderline general electronic gear like an iphone, ipad, kindle or any other tablet.

I think a unit like the mpc studio will attract many dabblers that wanna say im a producer , i got an mpc.

cos they have catered to the portable and the low price end of the market alot of peeps will hop on the mpc band wagon and act self righteous about they divine right to be a producer.

but conversely the peeps with the old mpc60 kit like the air of exclusivity they get from owning these retro pieces and almost feel like the new jacks are infringing on they territory by getting into music production and by buying into the mpc folklore.

i mean this one inch chrome finish joint is so convenient u can almost imagine some chick with the mpc tablet in her makeup bag making some lady gaga type beats.

so i see ur angle when u say it looks like a toy or u think nuakai is cheapening the brand.

but ultimately it may be marketing genius as this could make music production more mainstream then it is.
Like when game consoles became mainstream when Nintendo came with the wii or when ps2 came out with a dvd player all of a sudden games were not just for adolescent boys the market expanded to include more casual users.

i think this is what akia is looking to do with this.

I agree pretty much.

If your goal is to make a lot of money from "new producers", then akai's new products are pretty genius (everybody seems to be a producer nowadays... i make beats since three years now, and i don't have a problem still calling it a hobby and saying that i'm still an amateur with a lot to learn, people should be a little more humble about themselves sometimes).

I'm sure all the young kids will jump on these machines like they're hot buns fresh from the oven. And after all... they are far more in numbers compared to the few people who would have been excited about a new MPC keeping it true to the roots and oldschool. So yeah, this will make them the most dough for sure!

I also agree about the "ipad/tablet/iphone style", that's exactly what the studio reminds me about.

I couldn't care less however, and it doesn't upset me in the slightest. I wasn't expecting that there'll ever be a "new" oldschool MPC, and to be honest, i'm not looking to buy another (except for a 3000, which i would love to add to my collection).

I don't really see a problem with all this, there's still many legacy MPC's up for sale... so the oldschool folks can cop those, and the new kids on the block will be happy with the Ren and Studio... and maybe quite a few people will be somewhere inbetween having both worlds combined in their studios. As long as everybody is happy... :)

Im starting to warm up to the idea of laptop/mpc combo...

Neither of these would be my #1 go to piece, but I sometimes work out of town, and if I could just throw my CF card from my XL into my laptop and have in depth editing/tracking capabilities? There is potential, but the Ren and the Studio wont be replacing anything.
I think that for the new MPC's to be successful, Akai will have to come out with some kind of stand alone beat machine, even if it is just a scaled back version of the "old" mpcs. If they tether themselves to a box manufactured by someone else (a computer), they are limiting their potential.

I am too, never done it before but I'm seriously considering it.

Before with stand-alones you only had the power of the individual machine, now your limitations are your own computer. Many people bitched about ram limitations (older users are used to it and have no probs, I grew up with 16mb on asr10, I'm fine with whatever). I can think of several flaws and advantages with it.

I only had 2 MB on my XL for the first year and a half,

I dont have very much faith in Akai's software/OS (see the mpc1000), so I guess that will truly be the deciding factor. From the screenshots, the software looks good, and they show some dope features (bit reduction, timestretch, etc).....I guess only time will tell.

I kind of wish I bought a MacBook Pro instead of a Mac Mini. But as much as I love the portability, the truth is that I produce all my music at home.... though it would be nice to sit on the couch with an MPC Studio, a MacBook Pro, and a pair of headphones. I still do that with my MPC1000 when I don't feel like sitting at my desk.
