SMPTE option vs MTC?

so im trying to decide whether or not i actually need the mpc SMPTE option or if i can get around it by just using MTC? im trying to sync everything up using a mac with ptle, and dp3. ive got a friend that has the motu midi timepiece av, which can convert MTC to SMPTE and vice versa, so im guessing that might be sufficient? or am i off?

any suggestions?

No need for SMPTE sync unless you are making beats and want to control an external deck (Beta, 2" analog, etc.) with the MPC as the master....like for scoring beats to film, video. Thats not how I would do it though. SMPTE/MTC sync always takes a second or two to sync up. I use PTLE with a MPC4k/2k and I use midi (beat) clock instead of Midi Time Code between the two. That way the MPC starts immediately when PT is engaged. With midi time code, there is a catch up delay between the two systems. Also with midi (beat) clock sync, you can start and stop the MPC without PT starting...which makes for quick beat editing. I've been told that midi clock does not hold perfect sync as well or for as long as SMPTE or Midi TC, but I have not noticed any loss of sync on any 10 minute tracks.
