Can iPad be treated as a multi timbral sound source?

I'm thinking about sequencing with the MPC 1000 and using the iPad and it's various apps as my synths. I'm wondering if it is possible to sequence multiple MIDI channels from the MPC and have those channels assigned to different apps.

Such as:

MIDI Channel 1 > Korg iMS20
MIDI Channel 2 > Addictive Synth

And so on

Any one have any experience with this?

So to answer my own question. Yes, it is possible. I was using Sunrizer on channel 1 and Addictive synth on channel 2. I had to experiment using Wifi Midi so things were a bit sluggish, but it did work. I'll likely get the Alesis IO dock or iStudio when it's released. I REALLY like this combo of MPC 1000 and iPad 2. With the DJay app I can sample from my iTunes library and speed up/down without changing pitch in real time. This is a great mobile setup for me.

Some issues with audio in several apps / kinda tuff to remove / constantly charging the iPad too - the iPad has a 1000 cycle charge life / no sysex support

You can use any driverless / class compliant interface with or without a powered usb hub . If you want to keep using wifi midi google creating an Ad Hoc network ...less latency as it's device to device wifi .

Yo forwerd, let me know how this works out for you. I'm thinking of having the same setup as you. I want to use my iPad as my sound module, synth, etc. I think the power of the iPad will really be something once the iPad 3 hits.

It will work. Get a USB -> midi cable. I have one and I sequence Animoog, and sample it in sync on my MPC1000.

You're kind of limited using 2 synths though... the iPad is not that powerful

Try using SampleTank. It has 4 instruments support built in. I'll try it myself too.

I have all the big name apps from the store. Animoog, NLOGPoly and Sunrizer are the shit if you're into synths. too bad you can't have multi timbrality. I know you can run them in parallel, but Animoog is a real hog.

Speaking of Sampletank. Sounds are ok, it is multi timbral, but via USB you can't send midi on 4 channels from the MPC. It's the same as with GarageBand: you have to be in instrument mode to be able to receive notes.

Check out Magellan, it's a dual synth with up to 6 osc's. You can send midi messages to one synth/the other/or both. Also Waldorf just released "Wave Generator" which is basically a waldorf PPG animoog and in my opinion one of the few iPad synths that truley creates unique timbres.

I'm sick of all the 2 & 3 osc subtractive synths for the iPad personally....

Nice! They just finally added an "initialize" feature so you grabbed it at just the right time. Usually I pick different apps for different parts, like Grainbender for pads, animoog for leads etc... But Magellan is one of the few apps right now which I make all sorts of synths with.

I was initially going to get animoog but I changed up at the last minute for something cheaper but still powerful.

I had a $50 gift card and i was going to get Animoog with it. When I scratched the silver on back the code came off with it, Doh! So I used my own account but I didn't want to purchase high cost apps. If it hadn't have been for that mistake I would have gotten Animoog and probably stopped there. Glad it worked out this way though.

I will be able to answer once I get my other iRig midi cable, my iRig mistakenly came with two power cables and one midi?!

maybe animoog will go on sale again, I think I got it for .99 cents...imma defntly check out the other apps mentioned here thou

Get the appshopper app. Hands down the best way to stay on top of those sales.
