CF and the s2000

I'm thinking of getting an s2000. It needs to be booted up with the OS disk, but I was thinking that my CF reader in my MPC 2kxl would work in the s2k. but I wonder if the OS file would load from the flash card like a floppy, then my samples could be within folders.

does any one know about the s2k enough to know if this would work?

any help would be appreciated

Works perfectly. The card reader in question is SCM PCD-50B with pcmcia cf adapter.

yikes, that looks tough... I question my ability to do this since i have never soldered anything before.

I have 'the slot' cf reader in my XL... which i installed. I don't remember it being too complex... but to get it to work in the s2k i don't know.

do you know the specs of 'the slot' cf reader? i know it only works with the provided 512mb card that came with it.

"The Slot" is an IDE device.

IDE is not supported on the S2000. To use a CF reader in the S2000 you would either need a SCSI CF Reader ($$$$) or a SCSI to IDE bridge ($$$).

If you were to add that internal SCSI connector, you could connect the S2000 to a computer and run MESA to transfer files back and forth.

Yup, you need a scsi card reader. If you really really need this, then get a reader + enclosure which you could hook up to the external port behind the device.

If you've never soldered before I wouldn't recommend starting with this mod

so the easiest way is to have an external CF reader attached by SCSI eh?

I've not really considered that just because it's not an ideal form factor. But it's probably too daunting to do the internal work to get something to replace the floppy, unless I had some electronics repair store do the work.

I recently bought a yamaha a4000 on ebay... but not even after recieving it I started thinking a cheaper s2000 would be just fine. So I don't even own a s2000, just thinking about it. I think the a4000 will be pretty cool though...

I don't totally mind using floppies either.. one of the main interests is just a rack sampler that runs silently. the a4000 has a big fan which might be noisey. still haven't recieved the package yet in the mail.

So you connect the s2000 directly to the computer with a SCSI cable and you can transfer files and sounds directly and not have to use media cards/zip/floppy etc.?

I have an s2000 that I got dirt cheap ($20) but haven't really found good use for it yet as I did not want to deal with floppies again (I was hoping to at some point put in a CF card reader). But will have to look into MESA now. thanks!

if you don't mind the idea of floppies, but want something more up to date, the HxC floppy emulator sd-card version is perfect and will definitely work with minimal hassle - the bigger hassle with it is simply creating the disk images and putting them on an sd card.

otherwise yea go external scsi card reader. i dont think an electronics repair store would even know wtf you want them to do if you asked for the work.

your only options are scsi or floppy drive or floppy emulator (with sd card).
