Hey guys,

What do you guys use to slice up songs and recordings for sampling? Just your MPCs or Maschine pretty much? I used to use a Maschine and Audacity but neither of those was quite what I was looking for. I wanted something that was designed for just slicing beats and was affordable, but I couldn't find any program out there that fit the bill - so I created one!

BeatCleaver is my new app that's designed to make slicing and sampling as quickly as possible, and I hope it might be useful for you guys. I can see a use case for MPC users where maybe you want to do some editing and sampling on your PC, and then use your MPC for sequencing and live performance. If that sounds like you, I think you might like BeatCleaver.

 Check out the BeatCleaver website here!

Here's a screenshot:

The main reasons you might want to try it are:

1) If you're using Audacity to sample, you know how frustrating the user interface can be. Navigating and previewing loops is way easier in BeatCleaver.

2) If you've written a song in a DAW and want to grab parts of it to perform with your MPC, you can do a multi-track export from your DAW and then slice it up with BeatCleaver. The "Advanced Slicing" menu I just added lets you enter in a tempo and then tell it to slice every X bars or beats.

I've also go two free copies (Edit: That was fast, thanks to jonestown massacre and Funkdrops for the feedback! The free copies have been sent out.) to give away to the first people who download it and post some feedback in this thread, from an MPC user's perspective.

I'm really interested in any feedback anyone has! I hope we can make sampling even easier in the future. :)

Thanks guys!
Albert

P.S. I'm subscribed to this thread so I'll get an email when you reply.

Nice app man! Fair intuitive to zoom in and focus on a snippet, even using the touch-pad. Maybe some sort of +/- small increment button would help without cluttering too much the neat interface.

I'd like to see a loop function for the selected region, this would help tuning region's start and end point by ear, improving the flow.

It also would help to keep the make the pointer-reactive area around the slice border a bit smaller. This would help when you click on a small slice to preview it and you don't want to accidentally move the start/end point of the next slice.

Other than that it is a nice cool tool...

Thanks for the feedback! :)

About the loop function - by selected region, do you mean the region between the big red and blue trim markers, or just any old slice?

I'll PM you shortly...

Thanks again,
Albert

yo this program is dope. Ive been looking for something to make sampling from my mac easier, and this is it.

One sick addition would be to mass bit convert. (EG. 24-bit 48-kHz down to 16 bit 44.1 khz). Maybe something to consider for the future?

By region I meant the part between the red and blue markers, yes. Even if having BOTH looping features would really be BOSS. You could have a big led-like button which can turn between Region/Slice/Off using colors to quickly report on the loop settings.

--------------
EDIT: this is actually possible, it's just a bit hard to switch back and forth between both looping modes, but feasible;-)

I Really like the app's quickness and the looping of the chop/sections is perfect to make sure your loop is perfect!!!

Would it be possible to incorporate the method of chopping like in this video, as an option:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Oegfzj41U

This method of chopping is something i've been looking for, for some time, but not able to use logic (PC)

Alot of choppers/slicers that i have used in the past (recycle, etc..) are perfect for drums chops with the Sensitivity sliders. But for actual sample chopping with the sensitivity slider, that method is some what hit or miss because of what it is detecting. Which then leads to having to edit, and move markers(time consuming, but a necessity) :?

The way Justblaze does the chopping with a hot key slicing, is actually kind of nice and quick for melodic type samples..

Really loving the loop play back!!

Hey esaz666, thanks for reporting that bug.

I just uploading a new installer that includes a possible fix for that, so please try downloading BeatCleaver again! You might need to clear your web browser's cache or run it in privacy/incognito mode to make sure it actually downloads it again.

Please let me know if the new version works for you!

Thanks,
Albert

great ,yeah its working now, really cool,

a couple of feature request but im really interested in buying this ap,

a snap to zero on/off option for avoiding clicks would be my most wanted,
a play preview when loading sounds.

another thing i would like to be able to do is ,
when you drag the blue end marker to start,
i can't seem to move it back right to the end(unless zooming in,
so its just a minor thing)
maybe its me doing something mongy.. ;)

really nice.....

This looks awesome. Clean and easy. Would be great with some effects tho. EQ, Comp and maybe some LFO. Or maybe this can be added via my DAW (Reaper)? Will it work on Windows XP? If so, I'm buying. I'm currently using Recycle and BeatCleaver looks like a really nice substitute. And for only 15 dollars. iamexcited.com

Hey JoiBeats, yeah, I think EQ and comp would be handy too. You're not alone in requesting that, so it's on my TODO list :)

Unfortunately, in order to make it open mp3 and m4a files, I had to drop support for XP, so the Windows version requires Vista (mp3) or Windows 7 (mp3+m4a). I wish it didn't have to be this way because a lot of producers are still on XP, but I'm hoping it becomes less of an issue as time goes on.

esaz666: snapping to zeroes is also on my TODO list, thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks guys!
