Capabilities of Kaoss Pad 3

I have an MPC-1000, which i use for live performances. If I bought a korg KP3, would I be able to play a sample on the MPC, and then modulate its cutoff in real time using the KP3's touchscreen? For example, lets say I had a bass tone on a pad. Just 10 seconds or so of solid (non wobbling) bass tone. Would I be able to trigger that pad and then use the kp3 to turn that tone into a dynamically wobbling bass line? I suck at explaining things so please ask if you have no idea what i'm talking about.

Yes. KP3 is designed to do exactly that.

Do you mean modulating a sample as in within the MPC, where you plug the KP3 into the MIDI port and it controls the MPC internal filters to allow you to alter the parameters using the touchpad? Like Q-links but using touch? With JJ XL, yeah, I think so. You'd set the KP3 pad x and y to CC 1 and 2, then set the MPC to link CC 1 to Q1SLIDER and CC 2 to Q2SLIDER then set those sliders to control LPF on a sample.

Or do you mean just modulating the audio? Sure, you'd connect a couple of the individual outputs on the MPC to the KP3, then you can use the LFO LPF effect to control a LFO controlling a LPF, which would give the wobble effect, where if you move your finger left and right it'd make the LFO go slower or faster, and up or down changes resonance.

I don't care about midi. However, instead of changing the LFO rate, could I just change the cutoff fully manually? Would a kp3 (or mini kp2) be responsive enough to track fast wobbling? I see that the mini kp2 has a smaller touch screen, which would make it easier to hit the top and bottom of the cutoff range quickly. Assuming I wont use midi, is there any other considerations for kp3 vs mini kp2?

You can use the plain low pass filter. It works, but it's not easy to do fast wobbles by hand, like 1/16. But 1/8 can be done with finger sweeps, and 1/16 can be done with 2 finger taps, it just isn't a smooth sweep so I'm not sure if that's the effect you're going for. There's an effect on the miniKP2 called Jag Filter that does more of that wobble effect, where you control the LFO speed and shape, but it's automatic. For manual sweeps, the miniKP2 is probably easier than the much larger KP3 surface area. If you want me to record one of the effects using a sample so you can hear if it'll do what you want I'll try.

That would be amazing and much appreciated! I'd really like to hear a reasonably distorted/heavy bass tone with the lowpass filter. Go to 0:55 in this video for an example of the type of thing I want to be able to do:

I'm not sure if you know this... but your MPC has a LPF and LFO already. You can do bass wobbles using the Q-link, for doing them manually or controlling LFO speed.

Of course the KP3 can be used to apply fx real-time using the touchpad, that's what it's made for!

In addition to various filters, you have lots of other fx that would come in handy in a live performance. And the looping function, that could also come in handy.


Also, it would look pretty cool in a live gig, with all the red lights and the lighted touchpad.

KP3 also doubles as a nice little secondary sampler you can use to sample a loop from the mpc output and keep it playing while you stop the mpc to load programs

When I set the qlink to cutoff 1, cutoff 2, or cutoff 1 and 2, it doesnt seem to do anything. If its set to tune, pan, or volume it works fine, but the cutoff and filter do nothing at all on mine, unless i'm doing it wrong somehow.

First put on a filter (high or low) on the pad (and i think maybe set the frequency to 50 or something (try diff numbers too) and then try the q-link with cutoff
