For years I have solely worked on an MPC 2000, do as much as I could inside the 2000, then take it to a studio to track out the beats and sequences then final mix down. I want to do this at home, I just bought a kick ass new MacBook and now I want to upgrade my MPC to something that is more 2012 friendly and will be the rock that my studio is built around. What do you suggest in terms of MPC and what should I use as an interface/recording/mixing software program? I also want to record some DJ scratching over my MPC sequences. Thanks!

Well, the way I would look at it would be...

1. Did you observe what gear the studio had where you had your material recorded?

2. Did you ever inquire or ask the engineer any questions about the ins & outs of what went on during those sessions?

Going at it from square one is going to be more of an up hill climb, especially not having any clue as to knowing what it is you want, need, and can afford to get things done until you can get your hands on whatever necessities you're after.

What I might suggest may be well above your means & requirements. So imo, educating yourself first, then seeing what you want & can afford from that point will fair better than going at it in the blind and having a bunch of folks hitting you with their opinions on what they think you need.

you already a have good mpc, and one that you know well. you just need a soundcard/interface to track your beats out and into the computer. you can also run outputs from your dj mixer into it.

your soundcard/interface will probably come with a lite version of one of the major DAWs. i use logic xpress.

And what features would make it more "2012 friendly"?

People say this but never say why, what.

USB mixer, or regular mixer + interface.
Having the two separate gives more flexibility, but might be a bit more expensive.

Also, for the mixer, buy one with more channels than you'll need now. You'll hate yourself for buying like an 8-track mixer once you get more gear than just the MPC. And you can't escape the fever of wanting moar gear! :-D

minus the BLANG BUTTON, but plus some legitimacy.

I don't even care, I'm sticking with an actual MPC, not a controller.

I would say mpc 1000, 2500 or 4000 are all good candidates...4000 would be my #1choice personally I dislike waveform view on that machine and chopping style in comparison to JJOS, even more so now with NDC(non-destructive chopping) everything else is top notch.
