How do you store/arrange cabling?

Hey guys, a while back I changed spots... and I have boxes and bins of cabling. XLR, 1.4", all that stuff.. various lengths.... a lot are in the 6-12 foot range. I have a few 100' xlr cables that I keep in a bin in a coil (for lack of a better word) but those rarely get used.

Anyhow, I was trying to think up a system to hang them or keep them.. something that doesn't take up too much space, but I dont like keeping them wound up in boxes.

Just curious what you guys have going

one of those walls with holes in it for hooks is excellent for cabling.

it takes up only a wall, you can see where everything is, and is cheap. you can visually sort things by length/type/whatever.

me - i got em bags and boxes all over the place and it sucks

it might be helpful - since cables can dangle and take up useful room - to either get pegboard as a long horizontal strip, or get a larger piece of pegboard and cut it to be in thinner strips to arrange horizontally.
basically if you re-allocate the board that would normally just be behind some dangling cable, you get more useable bang for yer buck.

Something like this would be ok if you don't have too many cables.

I use those plastic tube cable holders. You can get them at office stores but they're much cheaper online. They can hold up to 4 1/4"'s cables. I also use those flat cable holders that open on on side and usually have an adhesive strip on the back if you want to mount them.

funny you should bring this up... i've had a bunch of spare cables all tangled-up in a cardboard box until just a couple days ago... i finally decided to put the spare closet in the room to good use and hang them all up in there... i apologize for the crappy phone pic, but you get the idea... doesn't take a genius to come up with this solution, but it sure does the trick nicely...

for the ultimate in ghetto fabulousness, you could buy a couple cheap wooden dowels, tie string to both ends, then attach the string to the wall. you can now hang yer cables on yer dowel / cable holder.

that alctron holder looks good.. I might check into how much they charge for those if I can find a place online that those are sold... I think I would need several of those...

I dont have a closet I can use for cabling at the moment, before I had a pipe mounted at the old spot that I used the same way. My issue was that the spot where it hangs winds up getting bent into the cables... if the ark/bend was a larger diameter then it would be better.

thanks guys... I was sure some of you had some space saving ideas... or ones that wouldn't take a 6 foot section of wall/floor space.

i just keep all my spare cables ( i dont have a lot though ),, in a big pile under the bed.

I have a 50L Rubbermaid bin full of cabling of all types, all In various states of functionality. It's pretty hairy. I just "coil" them, as you said, then stuff the similar cables into those giant ziplock freezer bags. Stays clean for a while, until you have to jump into the bin to find a 3' XLR female to RCA cable (or some other one off uncommon random cable, lmfao). All the bags are labelled as well.

There was a thread on this at Off Topic, called 99 life hacks or something. Using papertowel rolls seems like a good idea. Just roll up the cable and stuff them in the empty roll and toss it in a box.

you gotta take like a million sh!ts until you got enough TP rolls for as many cables as most of us have laying around...

yeah right... you cant fit any mic cable into one of those tubes... That might work for usb cables and small stuff.... but I think my actual plan will be to throw out all my usb cables except for one or two spares.

I honestly think I will need to get one of those garden hose winder coils for the long set of xlr cables... I think they are around 100'

great ideas though.. I just want to get my cables out of the 50L rubbermaids..haha
