What I'm wondering is, can you sync your MPC to your DAW, and then use the "Track Mute" function to mute your DAW tracks?

I've looked around the web and have not found any example of such a configuration.

I run:
MPC 2500 w/ JJ OS XL
Ableton Live

But I am curious if it would work in any environment, really. :hmmm:

I do not use a computer based DAW...but I do have a multitrack recorder and the the instructions for my roland VS recorder show that the track status can be midi controlled by sequencers. So for me it can and I would think so for DAW as well. Volumes, sliders and such can be controlled on my vs as well.

Now, the thing is, I would never do this since I have the sequence in the MPC and would rather control it only on the MPC.

cheers,
Ian

I think the issue you'd have is does the Track Mute function being used send a MIDI out message? I would think no because it's an internal instruction specific the MPC's sequencer.

You could easily take a bank of pads and have them on an exclusive MIDI Out channel and then easily use Ableton's mapping to have the 16 pads act as mute and solo buttons on 16 channel strips.

Not quite what you want but I figure you could leave the bank(s) empty of samples and just use them as MIDI Out tracks and program the times to mute the live tracks with your MPC "Track Mutes". But I realize you wanted the two things to happen at once, live on the fly.

I'll try to look at OSXL today and see if I'm missing any way to do that. BUt off top I don't think track mute is a function that can send externally on MIDI CC's on JJOSXL.

yeah i agree with metatron. I use JJOSXL to but do think that you can make a work around. Simply set your DAW to respond to a midi CC then set that MIDI CC to a pad via main window, a new function in JJOSXL, and then your sweet. That is if your DAW can be set up this way. I use live but never tried to do this but sure it can be. Maybe if i can be bothered i might give it a go but.

Ok. Next time I am having an MPC sesh I'll hook it up and see. Am finishing up an album in Live, stoked for it to be finished soon so I can really dive into this machine. Also need to make sure my MIDI cables work.

Do I need a MIDI interface, or will a MIDI/usb cable work fine?

it should work fine - those cables have basic midi interfaces built in.
