Hi guys i'm in the market for a 6176.

Since i never heard one before i'd like to ask what is your opinion of it.

I'm thinking about running drum samples or synth sounds through it before sampling into mpc 3000

Also i'd use it for a bit of compression on my drums tracking out of the 3000.

Has any one else here used it like that and would you recommend it for the money?

Any opinions would be appreciated

the ua stuff is, for lack of a better term, magic.

on one hand, i think that kind of money is overkill for treating samples, but on the other hand, i can appreciate the desire to make every part of the process absolutely the best quality you could have.
you wont find a 'better' pre / strip unless you start pillaging old custom consoles.

for the money though?
yo could get the ua apollo and then have unlimited amounts of those things in software. the ua software really nails it - and the prices for more plugins down the road wont hurt as much.

if you're spending that kind of money, you cant go wrong. its just about how useful you can make it.

I agree with Tape Deck. If you want that unit and have the loot go for it. you wont regret it but I think the Apollo deal will serve you even better and give you more flexibility in and out the box. I have the UAD-2 Satellite QUAD Core box it really helped me pull things together nicely for a project I released but sadly I got it a few months before the apollo came out. I didnt see it coming (only a couple of pennies more). Had I known I would have gotten the Apollo for the addition of real time processing ability like what you are thinking of doing.

I will tell you what... you will get the same sound quality that you are after from the modeled version of whatever UA has to offer in the box and with the Apollo it can be used for tracking and typical out of the box stuff too.

If you were looking for a vocal chain, I would highly recommend it. I use a UA Solo 610 pre amp....and it sounds awesome. For drums, I really like my Apollo. You can put the studer 800 on each channel, a pultec on each channel, an 1176 on each channel (if you want)....you get the idea. A little more versatility with the plugins for the money. I will say this though...if you decide to get the physical unit and run your kicks or whatever through it, you will NOT be disappointed. UA stuff rules!!

it was definitely worth asking the question. your answer was spot on. thanks a lot. it really opened my mind into looking at the apollo. to tell you the truth i never considered buying that because i didn't know much about it.

it sounds way better getting the apollo with the "free" UAD plugins, especially that i am looking for an audio interface upgrade anyways. i saw a few great UAD plugins for sale. they are very appealing i must admit for ease of use, and people seem to be very excited about a few of them

it seems so. for some reason though i am a bit reluctant spending that money for software i know it sounds funny.

While i believe a 6176 would hold on to its resale value better and i always prefere to use hardware i'm very tempted to get the apollo.

thanks for the input. it makes me believe the UAD plugins sound like the real deal don't they?

was really worth asking once again.

Still considering the 6176 but very tempted to get the apollo thanks to your answers and might as well go for it

its awesome, the 1176 part is anyway 8)

i really dont like the pre amp on vocals, id rather use an avalon 737, but the compressor sucks on that. nevertheless it is a good unit and the compressor is phenomenal, the mic pre is more of a preference thing, and it mightve been in the room i was in that i didnt so much like the sound.

i know heaps of people that love the preamps, so take what i say about that with a grain of salt.

when i had access to the 1176 compressor, i used it on every rap vocal i recorded along with a avalon 737sp for the preamp.

if i were you i might even think about just getting the compressor, and getting something cheaper and more clean sounding for the preamp (ie grace m-101 or FMR rnp.)
the fmr can be be had for around 400 used and the grace can be had from 400 to 500. i like the "clean" sounds of these better than the more colored preamp part of the 6176. you can get pretty clean sounds from the 6176 though, but it will never be as clean as the grace m-101.

not to throw a wrench in your plans, but i would also check out a FMR pbc-6a compressor. these units are only 475 and they sound phenomenal!
i would still use it if i had an 1176 sitting right next to it actually.

i bought a grace m101 and a fmr pbc-6a with the idea of getting a more budget friendly version of the avalon 737/ 1176 combo, and i would do it again before buying the avalon/ua compressor.

the ua plugins sound incredible. probably as close to the originals as different units sound from each other.

Cant say enough how UA plugs are killer. Not to mention having the processing power offloaded to another processor freeing up processing power in your DAW/computer. but fareal fareal u cant go wrong either way. That Studer 800 is magical and so is and the fatso... and on and on

yea its hard to go wrong with the 1176 part. Though, I will say Ive never really liked my 610. I have real la2as and I just dont really get what i want out of the 610 comp section or pre either. not that its bad at all (I havent sold it), but just not what I usually need. the main reason I kept it for the occasional need for DI guitar. but I think the 1176 part of your strip is closer to a real 76 than mine is to an LA2A, which is good news for you.
