New setup recommendations

In thinking about buying a new setup and I'd like some opinions on what's out there. I sold my last setup about 5 years ago and haven't really been paying close attention to what's out there. I had:

MPC2000xl
2 Technic 1200's
Vestax 05 pro
Yamaha AW16G
Roland MC505

I have about $1700 I can spend on new gear. I only need one turntable for scratching. I can sample my old break records and loop that shit up forever. Also need a mixer. I want some kind of sampling capabilities. I'm open to hardware or software. Any ideas??

do you mean a DAW vs a completely hardware setup? that's definitely the first thing to decide... It's an apples to semi-trucks comparison, there's no objective reason for either way, so you kinda just gotta choose one and go from there.

So your starting from scratch? If so I would say

DAW first

(whether pro tools, logic, ableton, fl studio etc)

Then audio interface
(since you want a hardware sampler it would be preferable to go w something that has a highrr I/O)

then sampler mixer etc etc


1700 isnt a lot of money you can easily spend a grand on good software or an interface so most of the stuff you will buy will be used



Now (and dont think im trying to advertise or promote anything) but the Renaissance is an audio interface/hardware/software type of machine that kills 3 birds w one stone, in all honesty I would buy more used stuff you can probably get more used stuff for 1700 then you can new stuff maybe im wrong but pick the gear you want and see if it fits in your budget

As a DJ I recommend one of these Mixers if you don't wanna spend a lot of money:

Ecler HAK 360 or DJ-Tech DIF-1S ( http://djworx.com/exclusive-dj-tech-dif-1s-promo/ )

A 1210 is good for everything (but mainly overpriced), I also use Numark TT500 and TTX, Stanton ST.150.

For Software I go with Ableton Live 8+9, I really like all the options you have for recording and producing.

Last but not least I use the MPC 2500. JJOSXL and Ableton give you everithing you need
Maybe you can also use the APC 20/40 with the DAW of your choice.

Man, there is such a lot of equipment for all those things out there, and everyone has its own favourites. Try different stuff in music centers, check youtube and ebay

Since you're aiming to just track out I'd spend 60 bucks on Reaper and call it a day for the software side. I'd buy some fairly good audio interface, not spending more than 200$ bucks there (maybe less if you're patient enough to score some bargaing off ebay). Decks-wise I'd go with some super-oem: really everything knocked-off the above mentioned Stanton 150 will do, from citronics, american audio, reloop... check what's up and see what they are selling for cheap around you, you should be able to buy a couple for 600$. Buy some good needles, score a cheap MPC (2500 will be better in my opinion, but should you a 2000XL for cheaper, don't skip it) and put the rest in the best 2-channel mixer you can find and don't forget the cables

Do you have monitors? You didn't mention having to buy them... if it's not the case, in order to squize them in (with a pair of 100i$h headphones) you might find yourself to buy second-hand/refurbished equipment as a lot of us did...

I'd be able to do it with $1700: craiglist, pawn shops, ebay are your friends.
