protools and mac's....

is anyone running protools on a mac? im tired of my pc acting up, and figured it's time to get a mac. i just want to know which mac's everyones using. i have a digi 001, and i was thinking about going for a dual precessor g4, or would i be able to get by with a g3??

Dual G4 would be good...be careful you dont get something too new cause you cant use the digi001 card in it....the buss voltage went from 5 to 3.3V i think it started with the G5 but check just in case.

Don't get a G3! It'l! be too slow. I'm getting by with a g4 867 and OS X. Not really enough power. Going to upgrade to a g5 soon. I love the mac platform. If I couldn't use a mac I would find some other means of making music. No dis to PC users, just my preference.

I would get the fastest g4 you can afford. I have a g4 powerbook 1.25ghz, and it's just fast enough for music.
I always use a pc for music though, unless i'm on the road. I think there's more sofware options for pc, and if you're calm enough not to care about re-installing and rebooting stuff they get the job done.

Go for a G4 Bi-Pro if you can. Add the more HD you can afford!

I use G5 2Ghz with Digi002 & P. IV PC.

i have been doing a lot of research when it comes to g4's. dont know too much about the g3. saw some good prices so i figured i would check it out. the buss voltage went up to 5 volts from 3.3 on the g5 so i cant use one of those unless i upgrade my protools hardware. i did check the digi user confrence, and came back with some good advice. im leaning towards a dual g4. should do the trick. my pc is fine, im tired of it for other reasons. it gets the job done, but kinda craps out sometimes when working within protools. i want a dedicated computer for music, and i thought i might as well get a mac for that purpose.

I use Pro Tools w/ Digi001 on a Mac G4/400 with a GigaDesign 1.5 Ghz upgrade. It's beautiful. Barely any problems and none with Pro Tools.
If you find a G4/400 and get a Dual 1.5Ghz upgrade, you may come in under budget. But, I think getting the fastest built-in Mac that you can will be best.

Try to avoid the G3 and forget about a Powerbook.

The Digi001 is a nice tool. I'll keep mne for some time to come.

How does it act up on your PC? I have a dual g5 1.8 and PT still crashes. My problem is that I don't have enough RAM. Maybe that is your problem on the PC?

i have as much ram as my pc will take.

Just thiught I'd add my .02, I'm runnin' PT on a custom built Athlon PC and I haven't had one problem (other then a virus my PC got but that was my fault). PC's and PT tend to run into problems because of the various parts that PC's are built with, you end up with a lot of hardware conflicts. I built my system for about 900 bucks and it runs PT just as well, if not better, than the G5. I used to use a G4 dual 1.25, it was cool but both my Athlon 64 desktop and my Athlon 2600 laptop give me more power than the Mac with PT.

Not tryin' to start a MAC vs. PC war(I don't own stock in either), just wanna make the point that both Macs and PC's are capable of runnin' PT with no problems.

Same here...I had a athlon pc built for pro tools and it runs as smooths as a baby's bottom........!

you might want to try cleaning your PC up,
as in reformat it entirely. set up swap disks properly (and whatever you do, dont use it for anything but pro tools).
im running protools free on my blue and white G3/256 mb ram/mac os 9.2 with no problems whatsoever.
i just keep it very stable.
