Buying a Mac Lap-top for MAC Protool LE Recording??

I was informed by a manager a Guitar Center,that my Emac isn't suitable
Any Ideas as to which on is the best?? I MAC?? Powerbook G4?? How much dough we talkin??

Unfortunately the dude is rite. Because the eMac has room for only one drive, you would be recording on just one drive, your system drive. That will cause lockups and malfunctions in Pro Tools cause in addition to recording your audio tracks on that drive, the OS X system itself has to run on that drive too.

A recipe for disaster; you'll need a machine which is expandable so you can install dedicated drives for Pro Tools recording. With G5s in full swing you should be able to find dual processor G4s going for cheap now. That's what I'm running and it's more than enough for Pro Tools and other things.

This one shop in Toronto is selling DP 1.42 Ghz G4 Power Macs for $1899.99 CDN, that's like $1200 USD, what a deal!.

If you're running a Digi001 like me, you'll have to stick to G4s as the PCI card won't work in G5s. What hardware do you have?

Why get a g4 lap top. For the price you can pretty much get a g5 desk top. lap tops are made to be moble so there parts are smaller but not always stronger. Desk tops are made to be strong! Just my two cents. O yea just in case you ask.............I have a laptop cause i got lucky and my other one broke and they couldnt fix it so i got a 1700 one for free! If i had to do it all over again i would got desktop if it was my money!

yeah, if it is your first or only machine, get a desktop mac. G4 DP1.25 works great for me. Only get a laptop if you gots shed loads of dough, or really really need to be carting your slightly less capable workhorse around.

another option is a used G4 quicksilver and a digi 001, since the 001 is PCI based it has no latency.

i got a pretty old G4 (800mhz, 768 ram) and can record up to 11 tracks at once through the digi001, bout 23 total. my homie runs a digi002 and a powerbook and cant do the 10 at once and has a bunch of other laptop related problems.

A 001 and a used G4 if you already have a screen will prolly be $1100 on eBay. but if your set on a laptop go for it.

To follow up on what Dove said, his boy with the Powerbook is having problems with multi tracking because the Powerbook only has one drive too. You need a desktop Mac, so you can install multiple drives. That's the best option.
