S5000- Optical Sampling

What's goin on, folks?

Anyone with an S5000 or S6000 using their lightpipe ins, hit me up about this.

I just copped myself an S5000. MIDI's all hooked up, USB is geared and samples are moving, no problem. Program editing, especially using ak.sys, I'll have to get used to, but at least it's similar to the S2800 I had been using.

What I am having difficulty with, however, is the optical in. I'd like to sample sounds from DVDs, and have run an optical cable from the out on my DVD player to the in on the S5000. I set my Record Source to Optical and have my player set to send PCM data, and am able to sample from the discs.

However, the samples are coming in at something like -20 to -16 dB and I'd prefer they were a bit closer to 0.

I had the same problem with recording a minidisk-player. It turned out there was a volume control hidden somewhere on the player that i had to crank up to maximum. Maybe your DVD has something like that too.

Nah, this is some peculiarity when sampling from DVDs. When playing CDs from the DVD player, for instance, volume is much louder. I assume this is to accomodate for the fact that movies have a much wider range of sound dynamics than most music CDs.

Any ideas as to how to fix this? And can someone properly explain to me the gain control for the S5000/6000?
