yo...what's yall take on this apparent takeover of VI's(vitual instruments and software synths)? it seems that the day of the sound module and keyboard may be threatened depending on what you read.

people are saying....why buy a $2000 keyboard or $800 sound module when you can get great sounds from software between $50 and $400. sweetwater.com has some info on this which seems pretty interesting. the link is http://www.sweetwater.com/feature/virtu ... ent-guide/

i just wanna know what yall think. i have a mpc 2000xl and a proteus 2000 sound module. i see now that the software jawn is available. plus...i look at how the price of the triton rack dropped. just seems like change is happening or has happened.

BY PRICE THERE IS NO Comparison.......................................

that said there is more to IT............................

the Big Change I see Happening IS that....................................

IT IS VERY RARE To Have A Studio Without A Computer ................

Even IF U USE HARDWARE to RECORD.............................................

CD BURNIN', LABEL PRINTIN', RESUME' ETC, INTERNET SHOPPIN' and INFO....................PLUS MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So VST, DXI, STAND ALONE, AUDIO UNIT................ETC..............IS A NATURAL PROGRESSION....................

Synths, Molules Will ONLY Survive IN SPECIALLTY............................

IF U DON'T THINK SO LOOK AT STUDIOS NOW..............................

U Will Find Hardware BUT ONLY THE SAME PIECES MOSTLY And those SAME PIECES WILL REMAIN FOR A VERY LONG TIME.................

TRITON, FANTOM, EMU, MOOGS ETC.......................

There is very little comparison in my opiniion whn it comes to the sound of virtual synths, they hold no wieght like george bush's word!

i use both but scanning sounds with hardware is much quicker. only the huge sample libraries can even mess with hardware. the basses in trilogy murder any synth. a lot of cats are running gigastudio on a seperate computer which is neccessary to get it running properly and using those huge gb libraries.

this receptor jawn seems bangin'. however...i'm tryin' to figure out exactly how it operates. i see you can hook up a midi controller or MPC or something via midi. OK. i see you can hook it up to the computer via ethernet. OK. But...where are the sounds actually stored? do you just buy virtual instruments and load them on ya computer or are they stored in the Receptor? So...is it working as a hard drive or is it simply streaming the sounds from your computers hard drive? i'm reading more on it now. very interesting though...

I'm not saying George Bush's word holds weight but I think this is bllsht,
You can get some pretty heavy sounds from software synths.
It's all the emulations that give software syns a bad name.
THe Arturia Mini Moog, for example, is an emulation of the mini moog and no it doesnt sound exactly like a mini moog but that doesn't mean its no good.
Of course it doesn't sound exactly like one, it's not one!
But if you take the time to mess with it you can make some pretty sweet sounds.

Personally i love hardware, when I play live I don't take a computer on stage with me (dark electronic music btw) and it is actually alot of work to get the computer out of my live setup, but theres nothing worse than going to a gig and watching some dude clicking a mouse.
I'm a hardware fan all the way, but if someone asks me what they should buy hardware or software synths:
The answer is software, don't waste your money on hardware if sounds is all you want.

Personally I try not to use "software synths". having said that, I've found that the TC Powercore SH101 emulation is really top notch. And The wavestation is also good (but I still prefer to use my rack wavestation as the VI is very unstable in my setup) anyhow, I recently did a quick comparison of the following:

Lately Bass from my TX81z Vs Lately Bass from Reason Subtractor.

Guess which won (in my subjective ears)?

The TX81z. If I can ever get around to posting two files from the "experiment" I'll let you know.
