Certain kinds of answering machines can record while you're actually on the phone.
Are you gonna record a rap from jail or something?

I've done it before with one of my boys in Baltimore but I did it ghetto style and opened the old style receiver and spliced the two receiver wires and ran those into my mixer. Bam, I could record conversations and junk. Nowadays like Itchy said, answering machines can do it easily..

record voicemail directly into MPC or 4Track and BOOM you have it, you can tweak it or whatever later.

Actually did it b4, someone left dirty death threat and I burned a CD from the message and it was used in court. P.S. The threat wasn't made to me. LOL

if you got one of those phones with that headset jack on the side... you can connect that to a mixer or whatever and record....

Radioshack sells (or used to sell way back) a little box you plug into your wall phonejack. Costs a couple bucks. The box has two outputs, a regular phonejack you plug the phone and whatever else into, and an 1/8" stereo line, which you can pop into a TRS jack with a 1/4" adapter, etc.

Fun times. I've also never made real use of it, but have tested it and it works beautifully.

Ive recorded from my phone before, but I did it the ghetto and guttah way...I taped my computer MIC to the phone (Where your ear goes) and then I plugged my headphones into my PC speakers to avoid feedback. And when you speak into the phone and the other person also speaks, you can hear it through the headphones LOL...peace

-experiment :D
