Correct list of Akai rack samplers corresponding to mpc's

I saw people asking this question a lot so here it is.


Mpc 60 = Rack: s900, s950


Mpc 3000 = Rack: s1000, s1100, s2800, s3200

Akai s3000xl, s3200xl s2000 not the same different converters.

MPC3000 = S3000, the S1000 etc are a bit different sounding than the S3000. (The S3200 is from the same series as the S3000, has a bit better converters in it)

The MPC60 is indeed based on the S900/950, but they changed de converters so that it sounded more HiFi (Better sounding). The S950 can sound a lot nastier than the 60.

MPC2000/2000XL = Based on S3000xl (Series, so also S2000)

MPC4000 is based on the Z4

The rest is based on hot air

I kind of knew as a group the s1000, s3000 sounded closer to each other then

Sorry does a s2800 sound identical to the mpc 3000?

the 2800 is basically a cut down version of the S3000
I thought that they used a bit cheaper parts ans I thought it sounded a little bit different. (The difference was really minor, more in gain and input gain etc.)

I feel that way sometimes. There is always some reason to buy another sampler.

Ultimately tho, I think if you have one really good sampler you don't really need anything else.


I think it was ashame that Akai moved towards a clear transparent (bland) sound, I think this paved the way for all the soft samplers to come in.

People just don't seem to get a sampler is not suppose to be a tape recorder!

Its suppose to be an instrument. Thats why there is no best (pro) hardware sampler. As they all have their own sound, and all work on different things.

Thats why I love my 4000
its got its own sound still
clean, but I can get any sound out of it
as for roland samplers
I like their sound, don't like how they work
Might pick one up soon (if the price is right)
Just found an emax rack for a really good price, I will pick that one up first

Yea make sure you get the OS disk with the emax, its a nightmare to find.

Does 4000 sound like 2500?

COz i thought the 2500 sounded absolutely dire.....


I own emax Eps16 and Su700. These are all the samplers i think are best.
I buy and sold loads, but i came to like this conclusion. I didn't really like s950 or 3000xl that much. There good, Just i don't like them.


May buy a roland s760 or emu E64 next.

I always ignored the rack samplers before, but i've been looking for some old school quality on my drums of late and thought that a rack would be the cheapest may of doing it.
How much can you expect to pay for the 3000 or 60 sound? or for the sp1200 sound?
cuz my college were actually selling off all their old hardware rack samplers for about £40 cuz no one used them anymore (s...something but i can't remember). I turned my nose up at them cuz i didn't know any better....what an ****!
I just hope there's some left when i go back after the summer.

Yea Emax is a lovely machine.

I have keyboard version. The actual keyboard has a really nice action.

Its got to be one of the nicest keyboards to just play. If i was not so scarred about using it for hours on end, I would use this as my master keyboard.

Certainly feels a lot better then a plastic midi controller.

Also its not easy to compare it to many other samplers. As the entire voice structure is analog.

Like I got an eps 16 recently. That certainly has nice sound. But emax is a much more....

Things like the voltage controlled envelopes give it a real crack. I guess i would like to maybe one day buy an sp12 as well. Possibly just for the sequencing and the swing more then anything else. Also the beat box format.


However Emax has some great stuff about it. Like being able to make keygroups. Also the built in chorus is very nice.


The only samplers i can think of off hand to compare this to would be the roland s330, and ensoniq mirrage.


But the roland only has an analog filter, and not analog volume envelopes. Well i am quite sure about that, tho i don't know 100%.

Also its midi ports seem to be pretty fast to me.


Emax is more like a high quality analog synth that you can choose your own sample as an oscillator for.

I have Emax one. I think the Emax 2 has a less analog voice structure.

I just got my hands on Emu Emulator III, all i can say i this thing is dangerous.

It's the chunkyiest sounding sampler i've used, instant beef in your drums, its that sick!!!!

Mines mint got it from a guy near me in london for £300 (touch!!!)even the sequencer is funky as hell in this thing, lets not even go there with filters 100% analog.

They are very very very hard to as is the Emu III rack version but worth every penny, trust me!!!

This is the sampler that was slept on, if you ever come in contact with one of these don't front jus splash da cash you won't regret it!!!!
