multi-tracking

what is a good digital multitracker, that's good for the money but not something with way too many features i'll never use.

i got yamaha aw16g. It works fine for me. 8 inputs, 16 tracks.

I would go with the Roland VS series of DAW's.They are probably the best thing going right now as fas as all in one mixers/recorders.They also have some very cool software inside of them that can do just about anything that you could want to do as far as editing and they also work twice as better if you hook up a computer monitor.I personally use the VS2480 it is the best money I have spent in a long time.If your music is MPC based(Meaning that you you use an MPC as your main piece)than you will be happy because of this machines digital in and midi capabilities.I was using Protools LE but with the style of music I am producing I found that Protools had a lot of features that I do not need.You can also sample into it and edit your samples like you would if you were using software like cool edit or soundforge then you can turn your edits into wav files for use in your MPC(This was one of the major selling points for me).Look into it would be worth your time you can pick up the 24 track version for about $2800 and the 18 track version for $1600.

The Roland Vs family is good.......I used to use the Vs880-Vxpanded now I use the Vs 1680........you can find a Vs 1680 for like 7 or 8 hundred if you search around The Vs 2480 is nice but I aint got that type of monet right now so I play how I play........have you thought about using your computer to record your projects its cheaper and you only have to get the software and maybe a new sound card but is still cheaper than the 7 or 8 hundred.......Think before you leap

I feel yall on the VS line. I haave the 1824 CD and for the most part it's a hot item. the only downside for me is the amount of inputs. though it has 8 inputs and aa guitar HI Z line in lines 1 & 2 bare dedicated to XLR mic lines. So if you plan to use your MPC's eight outs you're gonna need another mixer to go with it. However, it's still a steal considering all the options you have!

I recommend the Tascam 788......kinda slept on but its a great machine for the price(roughly $850-900 new with the burner, $600 without) and quite easy to use once you wrap yourself around the main recording functions....that and it just looks good next to the MPC......

The Roland Vs 1680 is dope.

if i were you, i would strictly either go Yamaha or Roland. Maybe even the DPS line is good but i have never really heard anything bad about the yamahas or rolands. I have messed with the 1680, its nice, and i have messed with all the aw's from 16g to 4416

i just copped a roland vs890 but im still trying to learn that ish. its overwhelming at first

Somebody tried out the Akai DPS 12? They look kind of good next to the MPC 2000 XL (way same design), and are dirt cheap here now (250 bucks)..
