i just wanted to elaborate on that dr.dre thing i just read about the equipment he uses..what exactly is the ssl4000 i understand its a big ass mixing board but why are those things like 100,000$ ? what exactly would you need one for?....and also would the ideal studio be something like ........
2 sound modules
keyboards
mpc2000xl???
and ssl of some kind
what else would really be the perfect studio equipment to make your production perfect?...also is the reason everybody uses computer programs like pro tools and REason is because its so easy to record on them because the computer interface is so friendly.Dre said in that article that he analog all the way..if he says that i can't help but trust his opinion because he's been in the game so long..feedback would be apprciative.thanks

SSL means Solid State Logic, that kind of mixing board's really expensive as Neve and it's use in finalprod. studio.
Unless you're rich bwoy , go for stuff like Mackie VLZ/D8B, 02R96 or the Tascam TDM24; all are good boards for HomeStudio and so for post- prod !!


Hum... I don't really sure but I think, DRE is now using a ... Pro-Tool ...
It doesn't means he left analog (recorder...), but he prob. edit the all things on Pro-Tool.

You coul'd also go for both digital & analog studio...

I posted a while back this info but I'll place it again. The SSL boards are the sh*t and I know because I've heard them for myself while I used to intern in a recording studio. Any sound put thru these boards will sound like butta. SSL has put us low budget producers/home studio owners on their agenda. Now you could get the same sound by purchasing this channel signal processor. It is the same technology used on the pro mixing boards and it only cost about 4 G's. This is the next piece of gear I'm working on getting fo sho!

You could probally get a used one for that price. Thats why I feel that the X Channel is mad cheap. If you are tracking to a DAW you dont need the complete mixing board, yet you could get the same sound for much less. A brand new SSL board will run you about half a mil. So you do the math.

Think about it Needle. Back then if you wanted the SSL sound you would have had to dish out $500 Gs. In todays market you can get the SSL sound for about 4 Gs. Now thats a big price margin. For everything else there's mastercard.

Nobody uses the mic pres on board anymore and big mixers are an anachronoism of the past. Just like 20's on an Escalade are not doing a thing for Gm's garbage suspension, SSL's are eye candy. Now if you need to record and Orchestra on a large soundstage maybe. If you want great sound get a room designer and a set of B&W 801's.

Thats great and all. But you still wont have that SSL sound. The bigger pictures is that even though everyone (Pros) and their mother is tracking into DAW; they still send their signal thru these boards. Thats how they obtain such richness in their sound. UAs 610 are great but SSLs rule. Timbo, Dre are among some producers that track to Pro Tools thru SSLs.

Go to your local music store and run your material thru these pres and you'll see what I'm talking about.

An old hip hop engineer I know won't touch SSL's, he hates them shits. He says they sound like trash once you use Neves or API's.

benny, it sounds to me like you need to keep researching..the more you learn the easier it will be to decide what the perfect setup is for yourself and what you are trying to do..peace

IMO if your spending 2 G's on a preamp then tube simulation is out of the question, why get an imitation when you can have the real thing? There are some amazing *real* tube preamps for that much, and even more great solid state ones. What pops in my mind first is the Great River Mp2 2 channel preamp for $1900 and the Manley M2 for around the same. The Avalon vt737 is a single channel for a little less money. Before you buy you gotta' do ALOT of research, a great preamp will make your sound amazing.
