turntables and getting a really nice signal for sampling

I use a terrible old turntable from the 70s which I want to upgrade to get a really nice signal for my samples which I mostly source from pretty rough old records. Which turntable will give me a great signal... Do I need to fork out for a 1210? Or can similar results be gained from a cheaper competitor.

Remember I am not a DJ and do not need the turntable for mixing, just a stable table which will give me a wicked signal to get in my Emu.

The best thing to get is a TT with a line out like the Numark TTX or Stanton STR8-100 or 80 (I think it has line out).

No grounding, no preamp needed.

So if i got one those TT i wouldnt need to spend money on a mixer?

you will probably need a mixer, just no preamp or ground wire.

I have a Stanton STR8-20 running to a Pioneer Receiver. I have the Receiver running to my mixer and I sample from my mixer. It gives me a great sound. The turntable is grounded to the receiver tho.

I use a TTX1 with an audiophile cartridge that came all the way from Hong Kong thanks to ebay. With its spdif out it is the ticket, line outs go to my mixer although most of the time I monitor thru the MPC.

i use 2x Technics 1210's MK2's (using FineLine needles) thru to my Allen & Heath Zone 62 (wicked sound)

and sometimes i use my Pioneer CDJ 1000's to sample via its digital output.

use good cables...it make the difference.

i use Proel...and sometimes BSS.

The Stanton ST100 is great. It has both line and phono outputs as well as SPDIF outputs. I like the quality of the sound as well.

well, they have one output that is selectable, not the same thing.

TTX1's are king.

I have the STR8-80, I chose it cuz it doesn't require any preamplification or grounding, you can just hook it up straight to the MPC via 1/4 inch or s/pdif and sample away.

ok aside from the "ive got this and that" replies, to answer your question basically a new deck will cost money for quality but no you wont have to splash out like on a 1200 to get satisfactory results.

not only the stylus but the deck itself affect sound quality, as well as the preamp of whatever you plug it in to (mixer or reciever), with no specific advantage over using a mid-range mixer's phono in rather then the sterei reciever as far as sample quality goes.

nearly any higher grade consumer decks will be fine for you or else a lower range dj line. considering you wont be dj'ing, this advice is doubly so.

I have a nice old Marantz amp for amplification which gives a good neutral sound so that is not really a worry.

My main concern is just getting the nicest signal in at stage 1. If thats not right all the fancy toys in the world will not make it any better!

I'm dealing with the same issue. I couldn't figure out if it was my table, cartridge or preamp that was giving me thin sound. So I took my turntable to my buddy's place, the table was fine, the cartridge was good -it's the preamp that sucks. Also, I can't figure out exactly how the turntable itself affects the sound...assuming it's flat and spins evenly and at the proper speed and you can make a good connection with your cartridge, does the type of turntable matter that much?

Just get a cheap Stanton or a cheap Numark, even if it's belt drive it's a leap over an old 70's joint. Make sure you get a good cartridge though... I had my Gemini XLDD50mkII for years with a stanton DISCMASTER since like '97 or '96... it's time for an upgrade for me also...
