Chaning bit resloution in the MPC

Quick question : is it possible to hcnage the bit resolution of the kit you have loaded into your MPC ? If the samples you have used are at 16 bit, can you lower them to 12 bit within the unit itself ?

No. Not exactly. I cant remeber if the akai os had this, but the JJOS allows you to use a bit-converter in the sample edit mode. This is used to "emulate" lower bit depths cuz the mpc1k only reads 16bit wave files. It still sounds decent though (to me at least).

EDIT: For those that dont believe me and think the mpc turns the sample into an 8bit or 12bit wave file, just save the sample and transfer it to a computer and read the properties of it. It will be 16bit.

on akaios it's in the effect section: bit grunger. (i like that on hihats.)

so it's kind of pretending, while the mpc reads only 16 bit/44100 hz wav files. outside converting requires reconverting to this specs.

If you want to take that sheen off the sound you'll probably need a 2Kxl.

or another alternative could be to do like me: Run your samples through a plugin such as the Sonalksis TBK bit crusher or Camel Audio's Camel Phat. Not the same results you would get from using a S950 or SP1200, but still decent reults. I have been making alot of "12bit" drum kits for my S3000 using my bit crusher plugin. I just run the samples through the TBK plugin and sample them right into the S3000. There are also alot of free bitcrusher plugins out there. Google will help with that search.

Coz, I had the chance to pick up a rather tired MPC2000 the other day for - wait for it - £100, but I wasn't too sure about being able to get some of the parts for it that were needed, so I didn't bother ( needed to be rebuilt from the ground up, really ). I noted your XL on ebay, though - it is in excellent shape.


Returning to my question, I mean I have a whole host of options open to me to manipulate my wav files in my various Pc software, but I just wondered if the MP had anything that would enable me to change down on the fly as and when the mood grabbed me for a particular sample, U know. Currently, I would need to whip the sample back into my PC, change down and then reload to the MP. I think the Grungelizer effect might be a good start for me ...

For those of you that are seriously into good FX plugs, don't forget to look at the 'Ohmboyz' range - some of the best out there for twisting sounds .... add them over your samples before phatting and exporting for use in the MP ... uniquely orginal all the way !

I think the MP is very limited in this regard. I was playing around with the effects the other day and the Bit Grunger only has one control (basically wet and dry), so you only really have one colour to play with. I'm sure I read somewhere that the payed for JJ os has a bit reducer which would be another alternative maybe?

Coming from a near 100% software setup back to using hardware again has thrown up a few workflow issues. Don't get me wrong, I love being back behind a current MPC as the clarity, feel and workflow is exactly what I need. It's just a case of accepting that most of my 'distortion/saturation/bit reduction' needs will still have to be done on the PC and transfered back into the 2500. No biggie...

the bit reducer on JJ can have a nice effect, is jus trial and error really. still no 9/50 tho.

THis is not a problem 4 me cuz i take the time to actually creat drum kits. Yeah editing an transfering may take up a little time initially but once done they are put on a zip disk for the S3000 to use any time.
