Blue MPC1000 = bad pads. Black MPC1000 = good pads.

Hello people,

I've been reading lots on these boards about the issue of the MPC1000 pads but have not found anywhere a conclusive way to determine whether the MPC i'm considering buying actually has the good pads or not.

I've ruled out getting a blue one. But I've been told that even some of the black ones have the bad pads (the earlier models).

My problem is this: I live in New Zealand so will have to import it from the US via Ebay, so I need a way to tell it has good pads, without being able to physically hold it in my hands!

Any advice is much appreciated.

Without seeing it in person you really can't know for sure. The only ones that come stock with new pads have a black back(in addition to the black body) compared to the blue and black bodied ones with the old pads. Those have metallic backs. Once it comes in wiggle the pads and if the ones around it move, you have the new ones.

i was at guitar center today and the black mpc 1000 there looks nothing like my black mpc 1000, so yea they got a newer black one and a old black one

by "back" do you mean bottom? or the back where you plug all the leads in?

its all very complicated, lol.. Ive got a black mpc, with a black back, bought brand new just over a year ago but i got a feeling ive got the "bad" pads?? when i try to wiggle the corner pads none of the others seem to move but i CAN lift the corner of the bottom pads out (another technique ive heard of to see if youve got the "good pads").. so i dont know...
If I DO have the good pads then i dred to think what the bad pads are like! lol, saying that tho they seem alright recently, after a years "break in" time.. dont seem to work very well using the free JJ OS tho even after tweaking the sensitivity, so ive stuck to the Akai OS untill I fork out for the full JJ. :0)

if you can lift the corner edge of the corner pad out, then you DEFINITELY have the new pads... that would impossible with the old style pads.

check if the seriel number ends in BK-N (N-standing for New pads)

first run blue ones have good pads, first run back ones have bad pads. With the blue ones its a toss up, but if your mpc blk comes in a boc with a pic of the mpc, and not the lil dancing guy, your good. also, bk-n is one way, and the pad move is another way, and just buying a replacement and changing em out is another way too.

I think its fair to say that the answer to the original question is, No there isnt REALLY any way to tell if youve got the new pads without physically having the machine.
Im more confused than ever! If I go by one rule i have the new pads but if I listen to another then I have the pad ones..
Ive got a black mpc just over a year old, bought brand new, came in the box with the mpc pic on it, has got a black back & can lift the bottom pad corner out, BUT, when I "wiggle" the pads the others dont seem to move (indicating bad pads) & my serial number DOESNT end in BK-N, its just BK..
Personally I feel theres to much hype over which pads you have, In fact I think that was probably one of the first things I heard or found out about when I first looked into getting an mpc 1000 its talked about so much..
It would be nice to finally find out if ive got the good or bad pads but to be honest im not to bothered about it anymore, Its one of those things you go through when you first get your mpc but then after a while forget about & just "get used" to whichever pads you do have!
funny enough I went through the same phase when I found out my LCD TV model number had a "good" screen & "bad" screen... I had the good screen

I DO have the good pads. Ive just seen a vid on youtube of someone replacing the bad pads with the new ones & can now see why the old ones cant lift up in the corners & dont move if you wiggle one.. I just tried wiggling my pads a bit harder and they DO move...slightly! plus I can see the pad sensor underneath when i lift the corner up & the old pads dont seem to have that rubber "lip" on them around the edge..
Personally I think the best way for anybody to find out if they got the new ones is by simply lifting the corner pads up, you dont have to pull very hard to lift it up, if you can do that then youve got the new ones...
Also, now I know I have the good pads I must say I wouldnt say there perfect at all! When I first got the machine they were always double hitting when I pressed them & to this day I always have FULL LEVEL on all the time because each pad has a different response, even with messing with the settings..
If anyones got the bad pads and are getting by with them then save your money & stick with the pads until you have to change them, In the end as long as your pads work then new ones arent going to suddenly make your beats better!

well the problom wasnt actually the pads, but the pad sensors which went out, so keep that in mind. the older pads are stiffer and individual, so they do have a better response, but the old sensors suck.

BD, if you get an MP with the doo doo pads hit me up, a store in Melbourne has a fair few sets of the upgrade pad fix set for a good price.
