on the MPC2KXL, the inputs can only be monitored when the sampling mode is on.
is it the same on the MPC1000 ?

The complete guide to learning the MPC1000
If you go to the mixer page and press f5 [INPUT], you can set the INPUT THRU to on.
This will allow you to monitor your synth from the main outs or headphone out.

U don't have to own an mpc to check out the manual big dog.
If you are interested in it, check out the documentation, akaipro.com, it's a free manual.
All the features are detailed.
