cant play sample over a sample!

bit stuck here and yes i am new to the mpc scene!
i'm using a 1000 and when i record a sample and split it ,i create a new program so all the samples are on separate pads
and then add some other sounds to the rest of the pads,i cant seem to play EG. drums with the sequence i just recorded.
overdub doesn't work either.i cant seem to play two pads at once...only one comes through.its prob something simple but would appreciate some help!

look up the mono/poly settings in the manual. Provlem solved.

also make sure that each sample you want to layer on top next should be on a separate track.

yeah tried it and it does make a difference but when i play back the recording of the drums with the pads its all repeating on top of eachother and sounds like one big mess! do i have to change the mono/poly every time i want to layer the tracks?
